Fram Sd-1 Drain Plug Install

I bought this unit for my 91 S10 Blazer tonight. Pretty much because the old plug gasket decided to go and i got complaints from neighbors about large quantities of oil in their spots. Oh well.

Pretty much it goes like this:
Step One position drain pan under the old plug.
Step Two 14mm socket on old drain plug.
Step Three Let oil drain. Mine was kinda really hot like my dad said i got 3rd degree oil burns and made an environmental hazard.
Step Four Wipe clean oil drain area.
Step Five is to remove the SD-1 from the package.
Step Six is to remove the dust cap off the actuator valve.
Step Seven is to hand tighten the actuator valve in as far as you can go.
Step Eight is to take a 7/8" open ended stubby wrench and tighten till you can not go anymore.
Step Nine is to remove oil fill cap and put 5 quarts of Quaker State 5w-30 High Mileage oil in there. Quiets the ol engine rite down.

I did not remove the old filter as it only has about 500 miles of oil through it because it was the second oil change in a week 3rd change in 2 weeks and 4th in 5 weeks.


Overall the product design is really cool. A copper gasket instead of the paper type one normally associated with drain plugs. The cool part comes in 1500 miles when i change the oil again all i need to do is hookup the hose unloosen the drain portion of it and no mess and no need to lose plug in oil drain pan.

I got mine at autozone and save 10% because i know a guy who works there so i got employee discount.

I've got one on my Blazer it makes chaging the oil a pretty easy and clean job. I buy my oil by the jug, after a change I save the old jug. When it comes time to change the oil, I screw on the hose and let the oil drain right in to the old jug.


There are a couple things I don't like about them:

1) They don't let all the old oil out. Only a little stays in, but it is probably the oil with the most junk in it.

2) They don't have a magnet to collect metal particles.

Well i got this oil by the box for 5 bucks at walmart and it runs 2.50 a quart usually. i guess they had to get rid of it . The thing though is all the oil changes lately but i usually do get a jug and i have an empty runnin around here so in case i dont just a chemical spill. My neighbor across the street came home today from vacation to find that i parked there last night and had a quart in his spot oh man.

Yea, that is why I don't use them, they screw in too far and leave about 1/4 a quart in the oil drain pan.

This could be changed with a little hack saw work.

The threaded portion is just too long.
