My current cars are gas hogs (2 stangs and 1 explorer), so I asked an old friend of mine if he would sell me his 87 Fiero GT and he said yes. Now I am just curious what to offer for the car.
The car has the following options:
Sunroof
5spd
AC
P/W , P/L , P/Mirrors
Aftermarket CD player head unit
It appears to be in decent shape. Upon driving, inspecting, etc I found the following issues:
Puffs smoke when rev'd to high rpms
Cracked 1/4 windows
bad scratches in paint on front bumper and fender
Tranny is VERY stiff when trying to select 1st or 2nd but shifts smoothly
Interior OK condition
137,000 miles
Brake fluid needs to be changed
Clutch slave appears to be leaking (even though it has been replaced, see below)
Loud "humming" sound that increases with vehicle speed (can't tell if this is the rear differential or the tires).
In the maintenance records, it shows all of the following things have been done in the the last ~25k miles:
Engine overhaul (rings, bearings, etc)
New Gaskets/seals
02 Sensor
Starter
Fuel Pump
Water Pump
Clutch
Clutch Slave Cylinder
Plug wires
I used to own a 1986 V6 fiero, so from recollection, the car seems to drive, ride, handle, etc about like my old fiero did. I know these are not the most reliable mode of transportation, but I really like the look of Fieros and would really like owning one again (to and from work mainly).
He suggested $1800 or best offer. What does everyone think? It is a friend from years ago and he drives this as his only mode of transportation. I don't personally think that he would knowingly sell me the car if it were going to be a money pit. Should I just pass on this Fiero regardless of price? I don't want it to be a money pit or take away much wrenching time from my Stangs.
I know this is ultra lengthy, but any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
