95 Formula:Steering Loose

My 95 Formula has developed some really bad play in the steering. It is difficult to keep it in a straight line especially on the highway. The steering wheel has almost 1 inch of loose play each way. A mechanic replaced both tie rod ends and re-aligned it, but that did not help. Everything else he could see looked o.k. Could it be the rack itself? Advice please.....

your steering linkage most likely came loose. Its a commen problem on LT1 F-body's. If you look at your linkage just to right of your exhaust manifold on the drive side you will see a bolt. If you take out your airbag fuse loosen that bolt but don't take it out the whole way. Then with a hammer tap the linkage towards the firewall. til all play is removed. That should do the trick. Good luck.
