electrical issues

Ok. I need some help here. My 01 SE is having some issues. This morning the speedo started jumping around and the rpm's did too. Then it died while driving. It's like it was hit by an emp or something. ANybody have any clues as to what is going on? The speedo still jumps and doesn't work part of the time. And the tach jumps and the car jumps too. PLease help!

Sound like the Crankshaft position sensor. Myne had the same symptoms replaced it and it ran like a champ after. Not saying for sure but that what it sounds like to me.

Would that come up on a scanner? Had the guy at Advance Auto parts hook up the scanner and it pushed no codes out. Now it seems to be doing fine. Is it possible that some kind of electrical field could have crossed over the car and got it all wierd? We had a nasty lightening storm this morning. WHo knows. Seems okay now.

95% of the time NO and every dealer I took it too before I found out just scratched his um...head and shrugged his sholders.
NO code NO check or service engine soon lights just dead. I would almost bet for sure now that is your problem.

Ok...How do ya fix it?

Go under my name search threads started by user and it was like the first thread I started.
But briefly its a 30.00 (approx) part at autozone
Take off right front tire, splash guard, Harmonic balancer, then CPS (crankshaft position sensor) Replace and re assymble .
But the thread has everything you need to know it is not as easy as it sounds. Getting the harmonic bal center bolt off is a real pain.
I believe the thread was titled Someone please help.
If you have problems finding it I can locate later and pull to the front of the forum.

The GM service Manual refers to hooking the car to a scan tool and running a learning procedure for the Crank position. So, I think you may need to have a dealer do this after you replace the unit.

CKP System Variation Learn Procedure
The Crankshaft Position System Variation compensating values are stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) non-volatile memory after a learn procedure has been performed. If the actual Crankshaft Position System Variation is not within the Crankshaft Position System Variation compensating values stored in the PCM, DTC P0300 may set. Refer to Diagnostic Aids for DTC P0300.

The Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure should be performed if any of the following conditions are true:

DTC P1336 is set.
The PCM has been replaced.
The engine has been replaced.
The crankshaft has been replaced.
The crankshaft harmonic balancer has been replaced.
The crankshaft position sensor has been replaced.

Important:
The scan tool Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn function will be inhibited if the engine coolant temperature (ECT) is less than 70°C (158°F). Allow the engine to warm to at least 70°C (158°F) before attempting the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure.

The scan tool Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn function will be inhibited if any powertrain DTCs other than DTC P1336 are set before or during the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure. Diagnose and repair any DTCs set. Refer to the applicable DTCs.

Anyway, it looks like you need access to a GM scan tool, not just a generic obd code puller. I would also check the wiring to the sensor, it may just be adamaged harness

Could be jimmy but to really get a good inspection she'll still be pulling the Har Bal and if she's gonna do that she might as well replace it for 30.00. but you are right they say you need to do the case learn after replacement. However when I took mine down to the local GM dealership they said no you don't this is where I get confused. I never had mine done and it is running like a champ I may have been one of those lucky individuals i don't know.

Anyway nicole I can get the procedures for the case learn if you want them.

Need to take it into a shop that can do a CKP Variation Learn/case learn.

Any time one of these has been replaced

CKP sensor
Front cover or bracket holding the crankshaft position sensor
Target wheel (reluctor)
Crankshaft
Engine block
Engine assembly
PCM

97-2003 Engine CASE learn procedure:For DHP

1. Turn the key to on position
2. Turn Tech II on
3. Select the Diagnostics Menu
4. Select Car Information (Year, Make, Engine, Etc.) (Make sure they enter 1998 as the year.) (Also you will be asked what type of product line/type. It is a single letter code. Which corresponds to the first letter in your VIN)
5. Select Special Functions.
6. Select Variable Crankcase Learn Procedure.
7. Follow On Screen Directions.


The Crankcase Learn Procedure is going to ask the Technician to do the following:

1. Put E-brake On.
2. Make sure car is in neutral or park.
3. Turn engine on
4. Rev Car to Rev Limiter (car will hit limiter at 3,000 RPM)
5. Wait about 5 seconds.
6. Rev Car to Rev Limiter (The car will this time hits about 5,500 to 6,000 RPM)
7. Wait about 5 seconds.
8. Car is done.
