Blinking A/C LED, compressor shut off ('99 Galant)

I have a '99 Galant which I've been generally pretty happy with.
Well, I never got any notification of the wiring harness/manifold problems, so my harness recently burnt to a crisp. A call to Mitsubishi and they say that their records show they repaired the harness about two years ago! Not true, and why would it burn up if they had repaired it? Too, bad, they say.
Anyway, the current issue is that when the mechanic repaired the wiring harness, a problem cropped up with the A/C. Mechanic says the harness is correctly wired, and the problem must stem from damage that occured when the harness was incinerated. He has no clue as to what's happening with it.
The problem: when the A/C is turned on, the LED in the middle of the switch should glow orange, however, it glows for about 5 seconds, then the compressor shuts off, and the LED starts to blink steadily.
Anybody seen anything like this? Mechanic says fuses, etc., are ok.
Stumped and hot in Georgia.
