tinting - pro install or DIY?

Just looking for opinions on getting tinted windows. I got a price quote from a shop near me - they said $180 for everything. Didn't seem so bad to me but I have no baseline to measure it by. Is this a decent price? Also, is it worth paying someone to do it? Tinting has always seemed like something you'd have to practice a lot to be good at so I figured paying someone whose done it a lot would be worth it but again - I dunno :P

You might want to also ask in the Car Detailing (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1070)section since alot of these window tinting questions are answered over there.

i tinted my own...no bubbles at all after half a year. the only problem was that i did it by myself, and had no big tables, so there is a slight crease mark in one of them.

also, the hatch glass was hard as shit, and i ran out of tint. its concave, so you have to get the middle to stick, and then run little "fingers" out towards the ends. the fingers are parts that are slightly raised off the glass. then, you just heat those fingers(provifing you have a tint that shrinks slightly with heat) and they will shrink down to the point where you can just squeegie them flat.

id get it professionally done, and go as dark as you can, it always looks the best. whats the legal limit there?

If you look here (http://www.iwfa.com/iwfa/Law_Chart/State%20Law%20Chart.htm) you will see the Window Tinting Rules and Laws for each state.

don't diy.... too risky, break down and pay someone professional to do it. some places offer lifetime warranties... i'd hit them up first

Thx Dave for that link to the tinting laws. WOW - NJ doesn't specify any tinting limits? Nice! Although still, even if it's not specified, I know the cops will still pull you over if they think it's too dark. The guys at the shop told me 30% tint on the driver and passenger windows will get me by, and I have a friend who owns an NSX who blacked his windows out and kept getting pulled over so much he finally cut off all but a 4 or 5 inch strip along the bottom.

Anyways thanks guys, I'm gonna drop the cash on this. Just wanted to make sure.

guys, it really isnt that hard. if you want, ill go take a picture of my job and post it. couple trouble spots, but that was because i was in a rush, and they arent even very noticeable.

here check this out...you guys wouldnt want to let a soccer-mom show you up would ya?

atleast do the side windows and quarter glass yourself. ill admit, the hatch glass is a pain in the ass. you could save money and just get that done professionally.
