Drive Shaft end to T-Case has play

Thank you BlazerLT for giving me the idea regarding the driveshaft turning. My next question is that, the drive shaft end to transfer case that has no u-joint has play on it, up, down, left, right and it has a kind of a boot next to the end. What should I do with this problem. I will post a photo with my drive shaft if needed. Thanks again

why not reply in the previous thread instead of starting a new one/

I believe the connection to the transfer case is through a CV joint type mechanism.

Ah, is that called cv boot. Is there a cheap replacement on this.
Again, I do appreciate the quick response and won't stop thanking to you or anyone who help much of us in this forum.

Just for clarification, we talking about the driveshaft going to the front differential right?

Yes. The d-shaft that has cv joint connects to t-case and the other end with u-joint connects to front differential. Thanks again.

Do you notice any cracks in the boot where the driveshaft hooks into the transfer case?

Just to be sure I'll check it again. Might as well take a picture on it.

you have to buy a new driveshaft and they aren't cheap.

Did you see the photos? The area at cv joint wiggles a bit and the end where the t-case is hook also a bit loose and clunks when I twist it. Do you have any idea how much this front d-shaft is?Am asking cause if anyone can tell me what store is the cheapest I will go.Thanks Mac

I don't see any cracks at all except, the cv joint moves a bit when I push it and the end with round cap to t-case clunk when I twist it. I put the photo in the gallery. I wanted it to put here as a link but i don't know.

Fantastic chknugget! Now, the end going to the front differential is okay...no play and movement at all, like if I push or twist it at the u-joint and yoke.

A little play is normal.

Thanks BlazerLT. So, I don't have to worry about it anymore. But the clunk is annoying when I shift to reverse everytime though. Could it be the T-case inside?Hmm, I don't know.

I wouldn't be able to find it now, but I've seen a GM service bulletin saying it's normal for there to be a clunk if you're shifting in reverse while parked on an incline. I don't mean to say your problem is normal, but mine usually does it too-most parking spots/ driveways are angled up.

Is this while the engine is in 4x4 or 2x4?

I thought so. It probably normal either in 4x4 or 2x4. Thanks guys for your patience. I appreciate your real help. So I wouldn't be worrying then. But, if it's getting worse could I still ask for help in same thread?

If the clunk going into reverse is loud in 2wd, you should be looking into having your u-joints inspected.

It's kind of a sound.A bit loud clunk. If I replace the u-joint would it make less clunk?I mean a normal sound and an okay clunk. Tell me BlazerLT. Thank you.

Answer my first question, does this happen in 2wd?

tikoy47
04-09-2005, 04:38 PM
Yes. At 2wd and 4wd.

Ok, then it has really nothing to do with the front driveshaft.

Check your rear draft shaft for worn U-joints.

The rear drive shaft is okay, both u-joint ends have no play or the whole shaft is firm with no play. The clunk sound(reverse) can be heard in the front d-shaft on t-case end. Thanks for the patience.

BlazerLT

That is impossible when it is in 2wd bro.

I went to a car shop yesterday and have them look where the clunk noise is. They concluded that it is the transfer case an internal problem that they don't service. They recommended the AAMCO of which will cost eighteen hundred for replacing it with a refurbished part.I don't have that kind of money. I tried to put it in reverse again last night with my friend and I could see that the t-case and transmission moved when in that gear. But, other than any gear am okay. Also the 2wd light in electronic panel is solid when shifting to reverse.Could it be a t-case worn out.

Have you chaecked the transfer case fluid level yet?

tikoy47
04-12-2005, 05:41 AM
Good morning. The t-case fluid has been drained and refilled 6 months ago. I'll check it again.

if i remember right the list price for that driveshaft in canada is around $530 . you might wanna check a few websites that sell gm parts. the part number is either
15114530(with auto 4x4) or 15114531
good luck

BlazerLT

Or take it off a truck at the wrecking yard for a lot cheaper than that.

Is this clunk noise unnatural enough to force you to spend $1800, or even $100? Chances are that if you change it will still clunk. I have play in my transfer case too. The fact of the matter is that most vehicles will clunk when shifting from park to drive to reverse, and unless this really bothers you I don't think it will be enough to warrant a transfer case replacement.

If it is clunking abnormally that's one thing, if it's not I say it don't matter.

I checked the fluid and it's fine. I think the clunk sound(reverse) looks like normal. It only happens one time when engine is cold. After it's warmed up it's still clunk but faint sound. All other gears are quiet.I do appreciate Amac, nugget and blazerlt for giving me an idea with this. I'll never know, I still have to change the u-joint anyway someday. Can I put grease on the front and rear drive shaft u-joints instead? Thank you for you guys and this forum.
