camshaft position sensor

I have an '01 sephia. Check engine light came on and the mechanic says it's the camshaft position sensor. My understanding is that the problem is the sensor itself. They quoted me about $280 to replace the sensor. Does that sound right? How long can I afford to wait on this?

I've had a friend that had the light come on, get told it was the CPS, and he drove the car for about four months before he replaced it. I don't know about the price. But call autozone and find out how much the part actually is. And Check with the dealership and one other mechanic to see if you can get an estimate on replacement, and that should give you an idea if it is a reasonable price.

From what I have read, this sensor times the fuel injectors, so I imagine if this is going bad, it will eventually lead to rough running...

Thanks. I have gone with a more expensive fix. I decided to trade the car in, (I was thing about it anyway) and get an '04 Cavalier. Little better, little newer, more engine, etc...
