1996 Plymouth Voyager Stalls on highway

1996 Plymouth Voyager with 89,000 miles, 3.0 liter engine. been having an intermmittent problem for the last 30,000 miles. on warm days, on the higheay, the engine will cut off. If we put the car in neutral and restart it, it will often catch and keep going.

Car has been in the shop after one such incident and the mechanics found nothing wrong. It started and ran for them fine.

Someone suggested it might be a faulty coil pack? Any ideas and any ideas on how to test for the problem so it can be properly diagnosed?

Could be the coil or it could be something like the hall effect sensor . You need to see if there are any codes stored . Use the key on/off method . It will flash the codes in the check engine light such as a code 33 would be 3 flashes , a pause then 3 more flashes . When the codes are done it will flash code 55 .

a customer came to me with the same problem. the code was 300
multiplr missfire. did a full tune up then coil pack then cam sensor then
cranck sensor. The customer left and called ten minutes later with same
prblem. It stalles without warning. where do we go from here.

I had this same problem with my 96 Caravan. Come to find out it was a bad fuel pump. I had that thing in the shop more times than I would like to count. After all that it was a short in the pump.

i have the same problem also and dont know if i should change body control mod. or fuel pump first. any help would be appreciated

Are your fans coming on? I found a post on the Allpar forum, where a '96, 3.8 had a bad coolant sensor. The van ran fine until it got hot and it would go into shutdown mode, backfire, etc. Wait 20 minutes (cool down) and the van would start and run fine. My '96 T&C had similar problem. I found this thread while working up the nerve to drop my gas tank and change the pump.

The sensor is easy to check. Start the car and turn on the A/C. Within a minute or two the radiator fans should come on. Is they don't, try unplugging the sensor. The fans should run all the time with the sensor unplugged. I would unplug the sensor with the engine off. I put a new sensor in my '96 T&C 3.8L and my fans came on. Make sure your 3.0L works the same way.

I would say its definately the fuel pump. I had the same problem with mine and had to replace the pump and then it was fine. To be more specific its the fuel pump sock. You can't just replace the sock so you have to get a new pump. You might also want to purchase a new ring to hold the pump in the tank. This ring is very hard to get off and usually has to be broken off. You can get it at the dealership for around $6.

i had the same prob with my 97 caravan se, and it was the map sensor, i thought it was the fuel pump too
