My transmission on my '88 98 Regency is on its way out the door. It still has some time left on it but you never know how much. (It is starting to have probelms b/w first and second. 208,000 miles.

Any ideas how long my wonderful 3800 will last me? Engine is in great shape. Clean as a whistle. Not a leak to be found anywhere. Barely burns any oil (less than 1/4 ct every 3000 miles is all I ever have to add.) I will be hesitant to replace the trans. if I dont' think I could get at least another 50,000 (only a year and a half of drivinig for me) out of the engine. Anyone out there replaced a trany and their engine hold up to almost 300,000?

i have an 89 eighty eight which has the same engine and tranny and my tranny was toast at about 150,000 miles it would have gone longer if it had regular fluid changes and not such a heavy foot from me anyway currently even with my heavy foot i have 183,000 on my car it burns absolutely no oil its had oil changes every 3000 miles and i expect to get atleast 250,000 out of it and thats with my heavy foot now being as how your tranny has lasted over 200,000 miles you must drive it a little more sanely i've seen these engines get 350,000 miles on them without any problems so i would think you should be ok putting a new tranny in it i would say you have another 100,000 miles left in that motor

Thanks! Thats what I was figuring. I have only had the car for the last 60,000 miles though and I have regularly maintained the engine and trans. I do drive it hard. I have noticed changes in the drive train and suspension on mine since I have had it. I atributed that to my hard driving as much as age.

Hi all,

My recent aquisition is a '90 Ninety-Eight RB. It was originally my great-uncle's and then my grandfather's before I got it. It has the 3800 6-banger, uses very little oil, has absolutley no leaks and 135K original on the clock. I am in the process of tracking down the past reciepts and so far all I know is the motor is original and the tranny has had some work. Extent of the tranny work is unknown at this time, but what I hear is that repair was the result of grandpa not checking the fliud level before ferrying it from San Diego area in So Cal up to Mt Shasta in No Cal.

The crankcase oil looked fine whne I changed it but just last week I had the tranny services and I was shown the very fine metal at the bottom of the pan. I feel like flushing the tranny out again just to hopefully extend the life of the tranny but I could be wasting my money if it's in a mode where the tranny is just in the process of chewing itself up regardless of the particles. The car surges a bit under very light throttle (maintaining speed) around 35-40 mph. Not sure if that's a problem or if it's just lugging in high gear.

I drive the car a lot but I'm very easy on it. Seems an uncontrollable habit for me in this beautiful and comfortable car.

I'm hopefull for the engine longevity based on chevelleman's post suggesting 350K, but recent development have me wondering about the tranny.

Regards,

Jay
