I have a 96 Cavalier that we recently added freon to about 2 months ago when it was not blowing as cool as it used to. I also recently changed the serpentine belt because a loud rattle was coming from one of the pulleys (possibly AC...still is rattling). This solved the cooling problem until now when I was driving down the highway and the AC stopped working. I thought the belt slipped off but it was still on the AC pulley. The compressor did not appear to be coming on so I checked the fuses. The 10 amp AC fuse under the hood was blown. I replaced it, turned the AC on, and it blew again. I don't believe the compressor ever kicked in before it blew. Does this sound like the AC compressor is done and needs to be replaced...or something else? Thanks

may be a wiring problem... may be a compressor problem. To my knowledge the ac compressor isnt beat if its still blowing out cold air y'know?

It is not blowing cold air. It still blows, but it is the temp. of the air outside. I don't think the compressor is coming on at all. Any idea why the fuse is blowing? Will the fuse blow if the compressor locks up??

Beings a thread already started about AC, whenever I use my AC, a rattle or knocking noise comes from the engine. Sounds like a fan. I dunno. Has anyone had a problem like this before. it still blows realyl cold air though. Almost too cold.

Your AC compressor clutch is shot my friend. They can be fixed, but its better to get a new one. If your dealership replaces it and your outta warrenty, your lookin at 400 somthing.
To the thread starter... You should not be using freeon in your system. I don't know where you got it from, but its illegal to use it. You should be using the R-134a crap that comes aresol cans. Could be why your compressor is shot.

But why would my AC still work if that even makes a difference? I should take it back to where I got it last April, because it was even doing that after I frist got the car.
Where would be the best/cheapest place to get one? My local autoparts store or Chevy dealership or what?

Mine was doing the same things. While disenguaged it would make a rattle pinging noise and when turned on, it went away. But i had mine swapped out the first day i noticed the problem so yours could be a little more excessive than mine was. I have an extended warrenty on my car and that covered my ass. You could try advance auto or autozone. I know my total was 400 somthing that the warrentech place covered.
