Removing transmission.

Okay,

Has anyone had the occasion to pull a manual transmission out of a '97 pickup to replace the clutch? I have a general automotive repair knowledge and have replaced clutches before. Specifically I am having difficulty getting the boot off the shifter so I can get at the snap ring to pull the shifter assy out. I have a Haynes manual but that is about as useless a coloring book for children. His book says to remove the console and detach the accelerator assy. HUH???

I'm having the exact same problem!! I wanna' change the clutch in my '93 4 cylinder 2X2. I also have the Haynes manual which is useful for some things...but not for changing a clutch!

I haven't actually started the process, but I read through it last night and I'm stumped on the 'console'. I'm hoping to find some kind of website with a better description of how to get this done.

Have you checked a Chilton's manual? I haven't, but I'm thinking it can't be any worse than my Haynes manual. I think what we're gonna' need is some kind of Nissan shop manual. I'm going to look on e-bay and see what's out there.

I'd appreciate it if you let me know if you come across any useful information!

Cheers!

Grug,

I finally got pissed and just started yanking crap off. Turns out that you have to pull up the carpet in order to get to the bolts holding down the bracket that retains the boot in place. There are 2 screws to either side of the central 'console' near the floor in front of the gear shift. Additionally there is some kind of stop block under the gas pedal that needs to come up. then you work your way around the carpet pulling and removing trim as needed. Even with the carpet pulled back it is still a B***h to get the bolts out.

Good luck.

Uggh! By the sound of it, I'm not gonna' be looking forward to this job. I checked on e-bay for a Nissan shop manual. They're out there, but they want about $40-50 bucks for one! I may have to postpone this job 'till my vacation this summer as it sounds like the truck is gonna' be grounded for a week or so. I'm sure what's left of my clutch will get me through 'till then. Hopefully, won't do any damage to the flywheel.

Still, I'm interested to hear of your progress. I read in the Haynes manual that the front exhaust pipe has to come off. That'll be fun!

Cheers and good luck!

Yeah, I am not looking forward to it. I have to get myself good and worked up about it in order for me to get anything done. The truck has been up on ramps now for over a month. Just no enthusiasm here.

Oh well, the wife will be out of town for a week, I've got nothing better to do. Maybe I'll give her a coming home present and have her truck fixed when she gets back.

The easiest way to remove the shifter is to remove the top plate on the transmission (6 bolts) from underneath the vehicle, then you can leave the shifter boot and everything inside the car alone.
Also, make sure you remove the Crankshaft sensor from the top of the bellhousing or you will ruin it when you pull the transmission.
