Are you sure is a 1997 Escort? Because I have one and it doesnt have anywhere to be seen an analog clock. And the engine is 2.0 not 1.6.

I have (or the better half to be exact) has a -98 Escort Ghia which has this clock and funny enough it has the same problem also.
I have a question to make.
How is the instrument panel removed from this car?
Do I have to take the steering wheel off?

European Escorts are vastly different than North American Escorts.

what are you trying to do. if your putting in new gauge faces or whatnot. its sorta hard the first time, cuz its new to you, but its easy otherwise. but are you trying to remove the gauge cluster with the speedometer and tach, or the climate cluster with a/c and fan and that stuff. either one istnt ath difficult. they''ll haev some screws "torx" in them that need to be removed. and if its a tight fit over the steering wheel column like mine(93 escort GT) then all you ahev to do is drop the steering wheel column, which is only held up by four bolts. so youll haev to drop that, take out a few screws, then some more screws for the plastice gauge covering, then a few more for the bezel, and then the cluster is loose. taking out the enitre cluster is a bit more difficult but if you need that as well I could help you out.
hope that answers some of your questions

Took it out yesterday, my main interest was with the clock that is not running as it should. Did not take the steering wheel away (because couldn't get it off) so I had to use some in car acrobatics to get the piece out.
Now trying to figure out how to fix the clock...atleast one of the lights is dead and one iffy soldering fixed. Hope there's nothing wrong with the IC that soldered to PWB.
