Saint John Chrysler (formerly Saint John Mitsubishi) in my area gave me a quote today to do my front brake pads, 2nd gear syncro, clutch, and driveshaft. This is in Canadian funds. Are you ready? $9,662.91. My response... . What a load of crap. It is so high because they claim the 2nd gear synchronizer can not be replaced; the entire transmission must be replaced. What do you guys think of that? Can someone who has had the syncro replaced throw some thoughts my way? So anyway, I priced up a PST CF 1 piece driveshaft for $1100 and I'm working on the clutch. I'll buy the syncro and call some tranny shops around. Just thought I'd share...I'm hoping to get it all done for $4,000 (keeping in mind the transmission diff in pricing). My month keeps getting better and better.

All I can say is WOW. There are plenty of write ups out there and you can do the 2nd gear synchro yourself. My friend had no prior mechanical knowledge before buying his VR4 with a bad 2nd gear synchro. He replaced it on his own using write ups he found online.

This is the reason I always say never go to dealerships. They overcharge and are for the most part incompetant when it comes to our cars.

Youngvr4 has gotten his synchros done seperatly, so you can ask him about that.

You can get the synchros from kormex or crs@ ~$80 I think
Metal Matrix front pads from 3sx $110
installation free
CF Driveshaft $1100
Clutch $280-550 depending on what you want (all prices from 3sx)

That's $1840 in parts if you got the most expensive clutch possible. $1570 if you go with stock replacement clutch.
So even if you had a dealership do ALL the labor at $70 an hour it would have to take them over 100 hours to do all that installation to justify the price they quoted you...that is F-ing ridiculous. You can definantly get all that done for under $4k.

Well thanks alot guys, you're really helping with the technical stuff, but making me realize I can do better with the pricing most importantly. I feel much better now.

yeah they quoted to change my valve guide seals for $1500... i had the same responce lol...
i went and bought all the seals and tools my self around $200 and did them one weekend... now i have tools and know right on how to do it... so if anyone around my area needs some seals to be replaced i can make a little money off them i changed some guys valve guide seals on his 240sx for $400 ;) and i was still cheaper than the dealer... its always better to do things your self, you learn and advance.

I got the breakdown of my quote today, and now I'm wondering if I should go with some parts from Mitsu, or go all aftermarket - namely, the clutch and the brake pads. In Canadian dollars, they want $165.18 for the clutch, $126.62 for the pressure plate, and $55.60 for the release bearing. All in all, that's $347.40 for the clutch assembly, plus 0.8 hours labor. I doubt I could find a decent aftermarket one for that price, but let me know. Also, they want $73.52 for the pads. That's not bad either, unless I can get pads for less. Thoughts?
