hypnosis = mind over matter? are we really only using 10% of our brain?

Ok a few days ago we had a career day at my high school and a hypnotist was there. He was talking about his job and everything but kids were mainly gathered around to see his act. I saw some pretty funny things coming from my fellow students and some weird stuff.

That night the hypnotist put on a work shop for teachers, parents, and students to see and learn around. He talked about hypnosis being all in your subconcious and you must have an active and creative imagination but most importantly you must be willing.

Anyway, this is what brings forth my questions about this subject. The hypnotist brought out a young girl who was only 90 pounds, at the very most. He told her she would be straight as a board and wouldn't move a muscle, she'd just stay straight. Well a couple of coaches picked her up and she acted like a piece of wood because she didn't budge at all. The coaches then layed her down on two chairs. Her legs were resting on one and her arms stretched forward were resting on the other chair.
Now they hypnotist then asked a guy that was around 150 pounds to sit on her stomach with his feet off the ground. All of this kids weight would be on the girls stomach. The kid sat there and then bounced up and down a little and still, the girl didn't move an inch, she just layed there stiff.

As the title says does this mean hypnosis, using the power of your subconcious, can help a person do mind over matter? If a 13 year old girl that's not even 100 pounds hold up a guy that's 50% bigger than her without moving an inch, I'd say so.

If somebody asked you to lift up a something very heavy your mind would be filled with fear of not being able to lift it, doubt, disbelief, and other emotions that'd hold you back. Through hypnosis all those thoughts and emotions are gone. Could that girl of done what she did conciously? It's hightly doubtful but subconciously she was able to.

My last question is if it's true we only really use 10% of our brain could hypnosis unlock the other 90% of it? I know there are many people out there that think hypnosis is a joke and nothing more than an act at a magic show. It has very useful purposes though and I think it has been writen off over the years as that. The FBI uses hypnotist on witnesses who may hold information they don't even know they have. Hypnotist are used to help people stop smoking or some other kind of self help. These are just a few examples of how it can be used and the skies the limit.

Anyway, those are my questions about the subject and I'd like to hear your guy's thoughts about it.

Do you know in video games where you create-a-player? You only have so many points to move around each attribute, if you want him to be good at one thing, other skills must be sacrificed... that's what i think is happening here, her brain has focused all her strengths on to one thing and nothing else. But for the average human under normal circumstances, attaining this kind of focus is a VERY difficult thing to achieve... buddhist monks work their entire lives for a similar goal. Or if you like the easy route, just snort a line. :evillol:

That is not true, we use all of our brain, go pick up a modern psychology book and it will tell you that.

The FBI used hypnosis in the 80's (i believe) but they were supposed to stop using it because through leading questions they were able to get anyone they wanted to confess to anything at all. After a while they were supposed to be videotaped and have a lawyer there and everything to make sure they werent used but I think they had to abolish that technique.

I believe fully in hypnosis, like you said it doesnt work on some people but I have seen it done to people before and it is pretty crazy.

what i found crazy was the influence he left in their brains after the show was over. If you asked any of the students who were hypnotized the question, "how was the show?", everyone of them responded, "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats".

and keywords that would trigger them to pull stunts, this one kid stood up in the crowd and yelled "I wear womens underwear!!".

That is really unethical. She could have seriously hurt her back. People willl do what you suggest under hypnosis, but they are not bulletproof.

if that was true, then the worlds strongest man would be won by a wimpy little hypnotist. I dont believe you. Muscles can exert an extra amount of force from adrenaline in a short burst, due to flight instinct, but a 90 pound girl laying stiff as a board across 2 chairs with a kid sitting on her stomach is impossible. Our muscles are not so inefficient that a hypnotist can increase their strength by 1000 percent. You got hoaxed, or else you didnt see it and you got BS'd, and passed it on to us.

I do believe in hypnotism, yes, but I dont believe the story you just told us.

Yes, and no I am not going to tell you. Why? Because it isnt something for someone who doesnt have a full understanding of what to do and what can happen to experiment with. If you really want to do it then I suggest going to this crazy place once used by people of all ages. It is a mystical place where every bit of information you ever wanted to know can be found for free. Its called the library.

I honestly believe that if the human being could utilize 100% of there brain, that we would be able to move things with our mind, read minds, fly...yes, i said fly damnit.

Lol, imagine if your at the 1st floor at a mall....and you want to grab some dinner...just jump to the seconds floor....lol. I can imagine the looks....

ARRRRGHHHHH! You DO use all of your brain. Thats right, 100% of it. Its just one of those "old wives tales" crap. If you honestly dont believe that we use all of our brains then why not believe that the earth is flat, the sun revolves around the earth, and each time the moon rises its a different moon. Damnit take a freaking psychology class. Sorry for getting mad but damnit this is like the 5th time this week someone has said "Ya know, we only use 10% of our brains!"

sivic02 is right about the whole brain thing. the parts that we "don't" use serve as "insulators" if we didn't have those, the electrical activity that occurs in the brain would become too erratic, and as a result, the brain would short-circuit more, meaning we'd be a bunch of fucks having grand-mal seisures left and right. not a good start to your day.

i believe to an extent of mind over matter. I used to run cross country, and one thing my coach always told us was running was 10% physical and 90% mental. And honestly it really was. Like if you were running a race all by yourself you would concentrate on your running and your breathing. But if you were running with someone and talking you could easily improve your times. I know it seems hard to believe, but you would almost forget your in a race and you would feel pretty good.

Also im sure everyone has heard the stories of a car accident where someone gets pinned under the car and one person is able to lift the car up enough to get them out.

I also took 5 years of taekwando, and in it we would do alot of concentration exercises, especially when it comes to breaking bricks. Its pretty amazing when you watch a guy put his bare fist through 15 layers of brick and be completely unscratched. But if for a second you thought you couldnt do it, your hand would either break or be extremly sore.

Did they put spacers and light them on fire before the break like in that chuck norris movie?

Just giving you a hard time. :p I took my share of psych classes several years ago. The brain /neurology were the most interesting IMO.
