need help

I got an 88 LX 5.0 that the Speedometer no longer works. I was told that the Speedo gear on Speedometer needs to be replaced. I was thinking that it might be the cable but not sure. How can I tell what needs to be replaced?

The speedo gear is near the end of the transmission. It's made of plastic. You can usually unscrew a bolt, pull the speedo cable out and get to it. The cable is also not difficult to replace.
