Brake question

I have 2000 Mustang and I just got a brake job done on the front and rear with rotors turned also. They were telling at the brake place that I need new calipers. How long are calipers supposed to last? Thanks in advance.

The calipers are very reliable. I say go to a different shop to have your brakes worked on. They probally FUBARED them, or tried to force the rear calipers in. Our PBR calipers are extremely reliable, and Ford is not the only car maker that uses the exact same calipers.

The rear calipers are racheting calipers designed for ABS systems. You need a tool that twists the pistons in the calipers as it pushes them in.

If you do deside to change the brake calipers, then you might as well upgrade to Cobra R spec front calipers, which will cost you less than $400 for all the parts needed to upgrade, which are Calipers, pads, rotors, and brakelines.

I do my own brakes, it's cheaper in the long run, and I don't have some shop attempting to empty my wallet.

Thanks for the reply. I thought they were very reliable, but I wanted to make sure. Not only that there was no leaking and/or any cracks on any of the calipers. Nor did I lose any of the pads. I hate it when mechanics try to swindle you.

I'd like to say that calipers are usually a very reliable part. But that does not mean they do not go bad. I did my friends 00 GT brakes and when i went to do them I noticed that one of the front PBR calipers was leaking oil out the piston seal.

So while it is very unlikely your caliper is bad it could be so. But unless you notice your brake fluid reservoir is going down or your brakes fells funny. You don't have a caliper problem.
