This has been a major pain in the ass. Ill be driving across the causeway here in Louisiana and the car while shut off and this car is no fun to drive when the power steering is out. I was drving around New Orleans for a while and nothing happened but occasionally it will just die on me randomly. Once it dies I have to let it sit for a while because it wont start back up, it'll crank but wont fire. I'm low on money right now because of the tuition at Tulane and was wondering if anybody out there could help me out to see if its anything i can do before i have to bring it into the mechanic. I brought it once, he couldnt find anything and its hard to recreate the problem since it's random, I could use the help... It's a 1992 3000GT Sl

Take it to Autozone (for free), they can test your alternator, starter, and battery. That way you can either locate or eliminate them as possibilities.

Sounds like you need a tune up (Spark plugs/wires, O2 sensor, fuel injector cleaning).

Couple things though:

- when it dies is there still power to everything else like wipers/lights/dash lights/radio?? or does everything shut off?

- What's your mileage?

The fact that you have to let it sit for a while before it will start again makes me think that it's spark plugs/wires because it sounds like you're flooding the cylinder with fuel that didn't spark because the spark is too weak. There's other possibilities but that would make some sense at the moment.

That sounds like a good idea. When the car dies, all of the electrical system works, the engine is the only thing that dies. I currently have 150,000 miles on the car.

The only thing i dont understand is, can the spark plugs really do that at 75 mph. I didn't think something like that could happen.

Clean your IAC, other than that it may be your MFI relay.

Well in an extreme case the spark plugs could do that, if none of them fire for a few seconds. Do you notice any change in performance like stuttering or hesitation? or is everything normal right up until it dies?

Also do you know if the car had its 60k and 120k services?

yeah mabey you plugs are fouled up that or you wires are old and brittle and can get good spark... what im thinking is you looseing spark and your engine is flooding... but there can be alot of other things cause that too...

When driving, I didnt notice any change, it went from running to off and the car did have the services done to it. Ive been driving it around alot to see if I can get it to happen again but so far i haven't been successful. I have no idea how to make it happen and I can't bring it back to New Orleans because getting stuck in the road there would be a bad thing. I now have to use a Taurus to do my commuting to my work in Mandeville, i really want my car back!

does it have stock spark plug wires?
because i have a 92 and i jusrt recently changed my wires and ive notice a chang in the way it runs... runs alot better more spark better explosion = more hp. have you changed the plugs any time recently and do you brun alot of oil?

also it could be fuel related... fuel pump or the fpr.
my freind has a 3000gt also and his was runing like crap and it was because the fpr was messing up and leaking...

I don't know if the plugs are stock or not, I have never changed them myself. The wires are in good shape, i'm not sure about the plugs. My car does burn oil, I'm not sure what you would call "Alot". It has a decent amount of white smoke on start-up and when gas is applied.

blue smoke is burnt oil...white smoke is coolant. Could be a blown headgasket. Do you have excessive bubbles in your oil?
