Progress: Ferrari 360 Modena Spider

Every time I start a domestic lately, it turns into the project of the century. My latest, a 1969 Camaro+2001 Corvette, may be finished sometime in the next 4 years. I decided to start something of which I am completely ignorant. I had the Revelle Ferrari 360 Spider sitting on top of my "exotic" car pile, so I grabbed it and dug in. This one I decided will be displayed next to my Viper, so it had to be a color that would definately stand out next to that orange. It's a little crazy, but here it is:

This is the second wetcoat. I'll give it about a week, cut it, and put another coat of color on. Plans include a fairly detailed engine, black dash/carpet, and white seats. Feedback?

New York Color Long Lasting Nail Enamel in #133A-Purple Pizazz Frost :iceslolan So far I've used almost a bottle, at $0.93 each (at Wal-Mart). I love this stuff. Here's their site, for a full list of colors:

I have a few nail polish to be used for my car and yours look great on the Modena. As for the interior, why not white dash too instead of black? Just my two cents. :)

Looking at how the color came out, I probably will do the dash in white as well. Hey now, there's nothing wrong with guys looking at nail polish; not only did Will (will69camaro) look at the stuff with me and help me pick the color, he also paid for it!

looking good, the paint is different than normal, it will definetly stand out in a good way. I have the same kit and broke the window trim, so in the closet it went.

I too broke the window trim. I just glued it back together. Can't really sweat the small stuff!

Hey now, I only have one model that's been put on hold indefinately! Poor Cobra....This one won't follow the same road, once it's got color on it, it looks so good on the stand I have to finish it. Painting the body first is great incentive! Stupid homework, keeping me from modeling!

I've already put it next to the Viper. They'll be good shelf-mates!

Stupid homework, keeping me from modeling!

But then, it`s much more fun when you do it. Think of the boredom of being a professional modelbuilder :nono:

Anyway, i like purple. Give this "Modena Fiat" a set of chromed 22" something and a interior full of ICE, and you have your own "Pimp my Ferrari"-item :naughty:

Ok, gotta ask...
What did you use for a base coat under the FNP?
What did you thin the FNP with?

FNP = finger nail polish
:p

I used...drumroll please...Krylon White Primer as a base, two quick coats that dried maybe 12 hours. This was followed by a quick mistcoat through the airbrush with the "FNP," which was thinned with Duplicolor Automotive Paint Thinner. Then, not 15 minutes later, I did the first wetcoat, waited about 20 minutes, and gave it a second wetcoat. It's had a few days to dry, but I'm not gonna buff it until I get either the engine or the interior done. All said and done, if I had to buy the primer etc, I'm gonna have about $10-$12 in this build, including the kit.

I've been researching Ferraris on Ebay, I've decided that I want to do matching purple piping on the white seats, like some of the real ones have. That ought to be interesting! I've also decided on a white dash with black, purple and silver accents, and black carpet. The engine will have color-matched...I guess they're valve covers? The part that's supposed to be red? Everything else on the engine will be stock-appearing. I plan on doing light detail to it (a few wires and hoses, nothing show-stopping) As for wheels, I don't have much planned beyond the stock wheels with *maybe* a slight drop. I can't afford any right now, and I don't wanna wait for them to get here! However, I am taking donations.....

Deadline is set for Saturday, April 9th. If I can get my butt off this site and back to homework, that is...

I just pounded out a 10-page lab report for my Intro to Engineering Experimentation class. Time to go work on......Mechanics of Materials!! Then, if it isn't midnight, I might look at the Ferrari...as I walk past it on my way to bed.

Hopefully this engineering stuff will pay off, and I can just spend an hour a week polishing the 1:1 instead of 6 hours a week building the 1:24!

Crazy color choice, but hey something different. But - I gotta ask - the paint job looks like the body shines through a little bit at some spots (front bonnet). Did you want to have it like that?

Gorgeous colour...suits the lines of the car perfectly.
The white interior will really set the whole thing off....
FNP is great stuff....excellent colour range and generally pretty cheap.

This was the cars first round of FNP. You have to polish between every coat to try and get a smooth finish. The body wont show through when there is more than 1 wet coat.

Not sure what I think about the seats:

Should I leave the purple piping or have the seats straight white?

Got the final wetcoats laid down, pics tomorrow when the sun's out! I barely had enough paint, I was getting worried towards the end of the final coat.

I see I'm not gonna finish my deadline, and next week is a designated no-model week, so it may be a while before this one sees the shelf. I'll give it a week then do the final polish, I'm debating whether or not to clearcoat it. Depending on how shiny it gets, I may not. Which will be a first for a nail-polished car.
