SAARLOUIS, Germany, 26 March 2002 — The two millionth Ford Focus to be produced in Europe rolled off the assembly line at the Saarlouis assembly plant in Germany today.

The world's most popular car for a second consecutive year in 2001, with global sales of 917,000 units, the Ford Focus is also produced at Valencia in Spain, Hermosillo in Mexico, Pacheco in Argentina and Wayne in the USA. Over 2.5 million have now been sold worldwide.

At the Saarlouis plant, one of Ford's most productive facilities in Europe, some 6,400 employees produce 1,830 versions of the Ford Focus each day in three shifts. Production in 2001 reached a record level of 408,405 units, of which almost 77 percent were exported.

The Focus gives today’s demanding drivers the kind of car they are looking for, with dynamic characteristics that enhance driving quality, efficient package, flexible stowage and a dependable, fun-to-drive line up of powertrains. This includes low-weight, low-friction petrol engines ranging from the 1.4-litre 75 PS to the 2.0-litre 130 PS, along with a 115-PS TDCi second-generation common-rail diesel. This engine employs high-pressure electric injector technology for robust performance, refinement, improved fuel economy and emissions.

As proof of the dependability and quality of the Ford Focus, the car shot to the top of the reliability charts in Germany when TÜV—the authoritative industry body controlling and approving quality standards for industrial and consumer products—named it the country’s most reliable car between one and three years old in its “Auto

Report 2002” published at the end of January, and according to “Schwacke Automobil-Index,” Focus ranks second in Germany in residual value. In the UK’s CAP Used Car Confidence Index, car dealers said it was their favourite used car to stock.

Ford’s pledge to reintroduce performance into its Focus range is taking shape in 2002 with the launch of a new performance derivative of the world’s best selling car, the Focus ST170.

Building on a proven reputation for driving quality and dependability, the Focus ST170 is a refined sports derivative with a performance heart. Quick off the line, it is capable of zero-to-100-km/h in 8.2 sec, and has a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph). Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) team developed its 2.0-litre Duratec ST engine to deliver 173 PS (at 7,000 rpm). Combined with a new six-speed gearbox, powerful brakes, 17-inch alloy wheels, low-profile tyres, suspension tweaks and performance styling to match, the Focus ST170 makes performance not only affordable, but also refined and practical to own.
