how safe is it to go 150+

hello, i was just wondering the risks involved in going 150-155+ in a ls1 powered camaro, i mean i know the obvious ones such as dying, i just want to know how mechanically capable the car is of traveling at these speeds, i mean i seriously go that fast all the time and i am fairly confident driving at those speeds, i do have z rated tires

You can do 150mph with 4.10 gears... Anyway you would want to improve downforce if you are constinatly going that fast. Other than that I am not sure

wel aside from the fact that youre gonna put other in danger and will probably get arrested, keep in mind hitting bumps and whatnot are more dangerous the higher your speed is... and yea what do you top out with with your 4.10s?

I have, and the police Jet Rangers top out at 140 mph.

i understand its fun to drive fast, but its people like you that think they can drive really fast and not get caught or get into an accident that make everyone else pay for insurance and the extra look by the cops..

There's no reason why you should want to go that fast unless you're in some kind of race, in which case it should be at a track of some kind, like a proving ground. But go ahead, drive 150+ and prove to us the cops can't catch you, go ahead.

From what I read he asked how well the car can withstand that speed and for how long. Not whether or not we think he can outrun the cops or not. If he can he can, if not, that's his problem.

As for how the car will hold up, it will cause a lot more heat and friction on the engine internals, it will cause parts to wear at a much faster than normal rate. It'll pretty much last as long as you can keep up with maintaining it for that kind of abuse. I wouldn't do it to my car on a regular basis.

Thats what I'm wondering. Also you may want to research the effects of Ram Air being damaging since its actually working (assuming SS badges are legit etc)

Also I agree with more downforce. Get a bigger wing, not rycer at all but if you are doing it you want your rear end firmly down on the payment.

Also how LONG do you keep it +150? Curvy or just straight? Uphill or downlhill? Lil factors that add up. Also can you give a temperture of the area? that would affect your wear and tear.

with the mods you have your car should do 150+ pretty good, and you just gotta be smart about where you do it, ive done it once and didnt get caught, i pegged out past 160 racing a tt supra but that was in the mustang, and it felt just fine

Hitting 150 or whatever high speed on a 4 mile level stretch of open road is mostly dangerous to the driver only. This is assuming that you don't hit anyone. It's pretty safe really with a mecahnically sound car. How long do you want to hit 150? 2-3 miles, less? How often? Every day? If it's just once in a while it will not hurt a sound engine. To do it daily over a stretch of road you travel on the way to work or Grandma's house WILL accelerate engine wear.

And they only ALLOW that because some a-hole was involved in wreckless endangering.

It really does not matter what modifications you have. Cage no cage, this type of brakes vs. thoes, what speed rated tires you have, seat belt not seat belt. 150 is dangrous to your equipment and yourself. Now I am not saying that I condone it. I have done it many times but, I am willing to take the risk and I have done everything possible to minimize the risks of it.

I hit a possum doing about 130 on my bike, i thought that I was a dead man. it bounced right over him, and kept going. It didn't even kill the possum, after I cleaned out my pants I turned around and went back, he was gone, no where to be found. I've never been so lucky.

I've gone 185mph, once. It can do 170 just like that, 185 you have to get all tucked in, and give yourself about two to three mile stretch to get it up there.

Yep, they all were mine. the only ones that I have now is the red 96, and the bike. the 80 z28, i sold for a butt load of money(4 times what I had in it), and the white 91 had 213,000 miles on it, when i traded it in on the 96. i got $3600 dollars out of it, even with that many miles on it. i ended up only paying $2800 for my 96!!!

it's awesome, i went 200mph on a 2002 suzuki hayabusa, that was pretty wild. it is extremely loud going that fast, even with a helmet on. and there's really no way to tell what's in front of you, by the time your eyes and brain see it, you're already past it.

Kinda both, cause your head is vibrating from the air moving past it, then the speed on top of that. it makes it very difficult to see. i only did it once, just so i could say that i've gone 200mph. i'll probably never do it again.

An incident like that happened where i live several months ago. 2 99-04 Mustangs were racing on the highway which was wet btw, one of the drivers was drunk, and they were doing 120+. The drunk crashed and died, I also think he had a passenger aswell. Should of seen that Mustang though. It hit a tree, and it was real bad. The rearend was near the passenger side door. Car was completely totalled. Don't dunk and drive.

ok dude, i gove in that speed 150 to 150+ it it actully felt smooth, like if i wasnt drivin, more like flyin low. i did it on a freeway when it was stright for about a few milles. the only reason i did it cause i was spanking a civic, and a m3 that we past a while back chought up and past us............it was hella fun tho!

After my 6th or 7th roll, and the 200 yard slid on the roof, and two weeks in the hospital, im ready for another project :D

First to answer another question: With 4.10 gears, you would be in very high RPMs to be going 150, because those are ACCELERATION gears, perfect for drag racing.

Now, about 205, its not that far fetched. If you put, say, 2.07 (I think thats the gear) you could probably hit 225+, it will just take you a year and a day to get up there. Its all in the gearing boys, its all in the gearing.

A factory geared ls1 with 3.42s could hit 236 if it had the power

I dont believe that, I'm sorry. I think it'd max around 180-190, course I have no first hand experience on a LS-1 w/ 6-speed, so its very possible that im wrong.

There is a point at which this car will hit a brick wall due to drag limitations. I doubt you will have any control over the steering of the car at speeds over 190.

Exactly, air drag is the limiting factor.

and 320 horse is not enough to get there.

Hell 205 is quite impressve for cars that go to the bonniville salt flats.


I will have to do the calculating later I am in class but I am pretty sure you would need about 600+ HP to do it with TALL gears.

You can't just put a set of 2.00 something gears in a stock car and expect it to be able to run HIGH speed. Honestly, if you reduced the mechanical advatage that much, the engine would never be able to get into it's powerband in high gear, after 3rd gear, the engine would not be able to overcome the load.
