$8450!!! thats outrageous! I wouldnt pay more than about $6000 for that svt. Just take a look on ebay and how cheap they are. The svt motors are fairly strong. Stock rods have taken up to 300 whp. Nobody has yet to break a set. Stock crank is good for 1200 whp. The 98-early 99 pistons have a weak ringland design and have shown failure under boost applications. The 2000s came with a revised ringland and are fine. For naturally aspirated motors, its not an issue. Some have experienced spun rod bearings due to oil starvation, so most people including myself run 6 quarts of oil instead of the recommended 5.5 qts. Only thing thats a weak link is the stock differential. Its glass. Lots of wheel hop on a hard launch is a quick way to shatter it. Theres quite a bit of aftermarket available for the contour. A lot of people just dont know about it, because they aren't members on contour.org which is where a lot of the products started. (i.e ArizonaDynoChip turbo kit, every carbon fiber hood, etc). People on CEG have well over 200K on their 2.5L and are still running strong. Mine had 80K, before I upgraded to a 3.0L and turbo kit and the only thing i ever replaced on it was the waterpump at 72K. Now thats not to say, some people didnt have problems, but thats true for every manufacturer. Somebody always gets stuck with a lemon. Tell your friends to do some research on the contour before they bash Ford. The 2.5L duratec they put in the contour came directly from a porsche motor.

I would definetely choose the svt. Just not that one, since its way too expensive. The svt contour platform handles awesome. Anyone that ever takes a ride in one is for sure impressed. As far as looks and uniqueness I again would have to go with the svt. Only 11,455 were made over its 3 year span.

Sounds like your friends don't have a clue. The 2.5 duratec is a top notch motor. The only real problems with it, as stated above, is the oil starvation issue. This can be avoided with not only running a little more oil, but also avoiding hard right hand turns under full throttle.
I would also go with the SVT out of that list. Its quick, stops well and handles even better.

1. plastic impellar waterpump. Just upgrade to revised metal impellar. Also the stock differential as i said earlier is very easy to break.
2. Third gear syncro grind. Others could grind too, but third gear is typically the most common. Id say a lot can be learned from the previous owner by how smoothly the trans shifts. If its been beat on, chances are, youll be able to tell when you drive it. Be sure to put 6 qts of oil in, since oil starvation has been known to spin a bearing on long right hand sweeping turns.
3. Missing jackcovers, curb rash along front fascia, if its a black svt inspect for small blotches of spiderwebbing paint. Theres been a few known occurances. Be sure to drive the car and inspect transmission epsecially.
Theres more common problems that you can check over on contour.org in the FAQ's.

IIRC, LSD's go for around $600. The stock differential should hold up under normal driving conditions, but if you plan on drag racing it, the LSD is a must.
Few other common problems off the top of my head:
-late 99-00 models will at some point need a new fuel pump. Theres a screen on the bottom of the pump housing that gets clogged, causing the pump to burn up.
-the sunroof gears have been known to melt in warmer locations. There was a person on contour.org who started a group buy for the gears.

sounds like he spun a bearing from the description of the ad, since it lists a new engine. Should have just upgraded to a 3.0L, but im sure he paid the stealership about $5000 to put in a new svt engine with warranty. $5800 sounds pretty good to me. Btw, installing an lsd is a pretty labor intensive job. The engine must be lowered so the trans can be pulled. Expect to pay about $350 in labor if you already have the trans out of the car.

I've heard more than a few horror stories of dealerships replacing blown SVT motors with the standard 2.5. I'd check on that too.
