I replaced the starter the old one was shot. I've tried to realign the starter about 5 times but once the engine starts it sounds like the starter is still running. Anybody have any clues on what I might try? I tightened the top bolt first then the bottom one I inspected the the way the face plate lines up with the starter and it appears to be straight. Help???

I had this problem with my starter on my explorer. they gave me the wrong starter. they gave me a starter for an automatic and mines a manuel and the starter was not disengaging. Sometimes u can make a starter fit by putting a washerbetween the starter and the starter housing to space it. But the first thing i would do is pull the starter and just eyeball it and look to see if when the starter is not engaged if it would not be touching the flywheel

Thanks Beamer, When I went into buy the starter the part # they looked up was for a manual which I have (93), but when they brought it out and I looked at it it was different. When they brought out the one for the automatic it was the same size and bolt pattern as mine. I think I'll try a few shims to see if that works if it ever stops raining here.

Yes I have a manual transmission and when they (Advance Auto) looked up the part for a manual tranny and brought it out it was different the bolt pattern did not match up. When they brought out the one for the automatic tranny the pattern was correct. I still have the problem I've tried to shim the starter and it wtill sounds like it's enganged with the flywheel after I start it. I think the new starter/solenoid is bad. I also replaced the ignition swithch incase it was shorted and coausing the problem.

I was pretty sure there were two silinoids one on the starter and then the 93s have one on the left inside fender. (passenger side). If i recal i wa shabving starting issues and i bought a new silinoid and it never disengaged my starter and blew my original one up, so that could be it. goodluck

I believe what your talking about is the starter relay. I checked the voltage going to the solenoid and in the start position I had 12 vdc. When I let the key go it dropped to 0vdc which lets me think the starter I bought has a problem.
