The master cylinder is bad and leaking past the rubber, plunger...whatever they're calling the cup rubbers nowadays. When you push easy on the pedal it goes to the floor but if you stomp it it'll hold somewhat. Replace that thing...the brakes hafta work EVERY time.

check for leaks before replacing stuff...
a weak spring could have failed.

Do you mean a spring inside a caliper?

in the drum... but then again it prolly would lock up... but I would inspect everything...
or do the test where u clamp (dont use vice grips(use something smooth like a round bar of somesort)) all brake lines (flexy/rubber ones (i wouldnt do it if they are really old)) and then press the brakes.... if they still go to the floor--- then the master cylinder is bypassing like you(christ) said. and then remove clamp by clamp, if it is good then it should be hard ... if it goes to the floor, theres ur problem.. if they all go to the floor theres air in your lines.
i dunno... most liky if there is not leaks it prolly bypassing in the master cylinder but its not really a commen problem i dont think
