1996 Escort Engine light code P1443

Engline light came on. Codes checked at Autozone.
Code 420 - Catalist system efficiency below threshold
Code P1443 - Manufactures Code. They could not tell me what this second code indicated. They suggested that I might replace the O2 sensor or go to a Ford dealer and have them tell me?
I prefer to do my own work, but don't want to start replacing parts unneccessarily.
Does anyone know what Code P1443 indicates?
Thanks

My book says: P1443: "Very low or no purge flow"

If can be of any further help, let us know.

Yeah my 96lx also needed a purge solenoide/sensor dohicky, If I remember right, I had the P1443 code from that.

My 96 Wagon, 1.9L 90k auto, has the same code. Parts shop said it was a "dealer code" but my Chilton book says, " Evaporative emission control system - vaccum system purge control solenoid or vapor management valve malfunction". I can't seem to find either one in the manual. Any ideas as to where they are and which one might be the bad guy? Code was reset and is still off for now, but only about a mile from store. Absolutely no drivability problem other than the damn annoying light. 30+ MPG

Evaporative emission control system - 1. vaccum system purge control solenoid. 2. vapor management valve malfunction. These are both located in a vacuum line located down beside the battery. the solenoid can be purchased at autozone, and is relatively inexpensive, but that did not solve my problem. The other valve is a dealer item and I am going to buy at Junk Yard and try that when I get a chance, but haven't found yet. My car also runs fine with avg. 33 mpg. Love that with recent gas prices. Hope this might help and have a great day.
