Coolant Overflow

Is the obvious symtom of coolant coming out the overflow hose a stuck thermostat?

If you're lucky. Could also be a blown head gasket.

Wouldn't this problem occur everytime I used the car if the head gasket was blown? This has only happened twice in the last six months and the temp gauge never went above the half way mark so I know it never over heated.
