my wife has a 96 gl that she loves and just got a 97 sho (fully loaded for 3k) with 120k miles. i know very little about fords (had a 96 contour water pump behind timing belt no thanx) she's been looking online to see how she did. car is nice only 1 real dent sounds good but she keeps wondering about some problem she read about where the cams slide on sprockets unless welded. how common is this? is it real? should we get the cams welded if she's going to keep it? any comments with real input greatly appreciated

I don't know SHOs but I would be inclined to skip since that's at least a $500 job, maybe more like $1000, and you only paid $3k (and it's probably not worth much more than that privately) for the car; and, as well, the engine already has 120K on it, plus there's a real good chance that thing was beat on hard. Yes, the problem you mentioned is real, but whether you really need that operation done is highly debatable in your case.
