1998 transmission problem???

Thinking its time for a new car!! I have a 1998 cavalier z24 2.4. I was driving my car and goin to shift into 2nd gear, when it didn't grab just saw my rpms go up really high. I pulled off the road and put the car into 1st gear, which worked fine... so I pulled back on to the highway, again went to put the car into 2nd gear and again it didn't work... so I tried 3rd gear, which worked fine. I decide to drive the car home (carefully). What I learned so far is that 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear work fine.... BUT 2nd, 4th, and Reverse DO NOT. When playing with the shifter its like the rear gears (2nd, 4th, reverse) aren't there, nothing to grab on to, very loose (if that makes sense) Where as 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear feel fine and go into gear fine. Also, I noticed it is leaking transmission fliud. Until today everything with the transmission was great. The biggest pain in the butt part is the car has 105,000 miles, but at 77,000 miles the car had a new transmission. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts please HELP!! Thanks!

Sounds very unlikely to me that all of a sudden 2nd, 4th, and reverse would all go out at the same time... was it a progressive thing? like did it just get harder and harder to shift untill it suddenly wouldnt? or did it suddenly crap out on you?

Honestly, i never thought anything was wrong with it.. it never showed any signs of anything being wrong.. so yeah it just took a crap with no warning...

ii def had the exact same problem but it was only 2nd gear i was lucky im pretty sure u will either have to replace the gears that are messed up and the syncrenizers my car is actaully still getting fixed its cost me a grand to fix or u can go look for a tranny at a junkyard and put it in yourself which would save u a lot of :2cents:

Thanks guys for your help... I took the car to a transmission place and they told me it was both shift cables.. so its only gonna cost me $280 Thank God it wasnt the tranny.
