Scratchbuilding is fun!

I'm always trying to do something new. For the most part, it's only plastic. Just recently I've finally grown to where I'll try most anything.

I really want to make a model of my car, but no one makes Konig Helium rims, and without those 10lb wonder wheels, well, the model just wouldn't be my car.

After many many tries with varying success (mostly with other wheel styles) I've finally scratchbuilt a viable wheel. I am so happy I could just hug everyone here. Thanks limited24 and your Ferrari build that included the method I used here, and thanks Flyonthewall for the "You don't need tube if you have old wheels" revalation. What had I been thinking?

And sorry everyone, just bare with my pride for a moment. This thread will tank and it'll be over soon.

are you going to try to make a step-lip? I have a couple of viable methods for that, if you want.

Simple!
A: Subtractive method
1: get a piece of plastic slightly larger than what your want to scratch build.
2: Drill/grind/cut/file/sand off everything that doesn't look like what you are trying to make.
B: Additive method
1. Divide the object to be scratch built into simple shapes.
2. (see #1 & 2 above)
3. assemble as needed.
:p

Great work Willimo. If you can make wheels like that, you should be able to make anything! :D

Does scratchbuilding make you "Squeal Like a Happy Little Girl!"

It does indeed.

I made it essentially like this:
Limited24's "how to" (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1778919&postcount=52).

A couple differences: I used a single, thick piece if plastic sheet, which I cut out with drafting dividers (like a compass with two points). I used a metal axle (probably from a Revell kit?) through the center hole to chuck the disk. Otherwise, that's how I did it.

Looks great. I agree that scratchbuilding is fun, only when things doesn't go wrong. When you create something that looks like it is supposed to look, thats the best part.

Seems like a HUGE mold for that size part...

You are a huge mold!

Well, actually, it's just the right size, in my estimation. It's big enough to not flop around while the resin in the mold. More importantly making it that size makes creating the mold easy - I supergle the part to a sheet of styrene, take a mixing cup and flip it over, cut the bottom out and clay it down the the styrene. Making the mold box takes a grand total of 1 second, and that's the hardest part! (Besides waiting.)

Ah, I was wondering if you were going to cast the remaining wheels. I am very impressed!
