Am I being ripped off? Clutch job?

Allright, I know im an idiot but long story short, my macheanic is dropping in a new used eninge into my 88 Lude Si. Its costing me $1200 for labor and engine. So i called him to see how it was going and he said, that the clutch was worn and so he wanted to replace it while everything was down.

The thing is I had a clutch job done just last year, approxemently 20,000 miles ago. Sure, I drive it hard, and that means a little clutch wear. But 20K miles? And the bearing are perfect, i know how to drive I don't leave it in first at the lights.

I told him and he said, well it is worn and it will cost about 350 to 400 in labor to install it later, but I can do it now for the cost of parts.

What do you all think?

I hate it when mechanics tell me shit like that...unless you know the mechanic personally you just never know if they're lying. I'd hate to buy a new clutch when the old one is fine, but I'd also hate to re-install a bad clutch when the opportunity to replace it is right under my nose. Best thing to do is upgrade - get a stage 1 clutch instead of stock. That way you can justify replacing it even if it was still good, and stage 1's aren't that much more expensive than stock.

Go down and make him show you the clutch.

I agree with sofast go down check out the clutch and the fly wheel and if u think they need to be replaced, replace them other wise ur just gettin ripped...how much was he saying the new clutch would cost??

Im not sure, he hasn't gotten back to me. He said just for parts though, but how much does the clutch cost,and how much does he say it costs.

I'll just drop down there today and not even call him.

from what i understand, he's telling you the truth. he might be lying on whether or not its worn, but it will cost you $300-$400 to replace it later. depending on how bad it is, i'd do it now anyway. a standard clutch kit usually won't cost more than $100-$150. go see how bad it is.

and about leaving it in 1st at lights, the clutch never fully seperates from the flywheel, so if you leave it in first at lights, you're slowly grinding it away even tho you don't think so.

I now about the instalation cause I had it doen last year. I just had him do it. I think it was worn, I kind of did a lot of burning on the clucth and on the tires waiting through the traffic. GUess I won't do that anymore.
