My fiancee is going to kill me!!
I've been tring to save money and be a do-it-yourself kind of guy. Well she took her 2002 Alero in to the dealer because of the service engine/trac off/ abs off lights came on. (I found this forum after the fact) They told her it was bad wheel bearings. Well I told her I'd replace them, not really knowing how to do it. But I figured it out and I thought I did a good job.
The loud humming noise is gone, but now the wheels make a popping noise when you make sharp turns. I bought my bearings at Murray's auto shop - i believe they were the Motor City brand. I saw a thread about not using aftermarket bearings 'cause they will pop. Should I buy the OEM bearings? Is it something else? Help??

I have the same problem i am a first year mechanic and spent hours with a licenced mechanic who i work for to find out the problem but could not. I also used after market parts (parts master from piston ring) I figured the bearing was still the problem so i ordered another one and replaced it again. This did not fix the problem. My boss tightened all the bolts for parts that could be loos but this did not help. He decided to change the ball joint on trial and air but the custemer did not want to pay the 150 dollar part. I woul like to help you but i have no idea what it is.

Make sure you properly torqued the axle nut. These will pop if the nuts are not tight enough. It doesn't matter if you used an OEM or aftermarket bearing as they should be equal in performance. The other thing to check is to see if the axle shafts are wearing. A pop can indicate a bad CV joint that may have been overlooked due to the bearing noise. Good Luck!

You should replace them in pairs thought. My 99 Grand am used to eat up a set every year(warranty work), until I done it myself(no warranty) and I paid 110$ for each one. I havent had any poping, lots of rattles and stuff. I kept haveing a shake on the pass. side and I replace the CV joints on both sides when I done the bearing/hubs. Now the shakes gone, smothed it right out.
