22RE valvetrain

I have had my 94 p/u with a 22RE engine for about 6 months and it seems that the valve train is noisier than most other engines, but it seems to run fine. Is this typical for this engine design ? Do they have hydraulic or solid lifters ?

Rocker arms are actuated directly by the cam shaft. If your valve train is noisy, a valve adjustment probably is in order.

I changed the cap, rotor, regular oil changes at 4500 miles (it's almost all highway miles) using Mobil 1, Oil filter (Fram DG Doublegaurd series). I'll get to the plugs soon, and the Air filter looks clean.

OK - thanks, I'll plan on doing that soon. I picked up a Chilton book so I will read up on how to do it. I adjusted the valves on a solid lifter small block Chevy many years ago. It probably is a similar proceedure.

Getting a manual is a good first step.
Now its time to do a bumper to bumper inspection.
This will help in developing a maintenance and repair schedule.
When adjusting the valves, do not reuse the valve cover gasket. If a valve cover gasket is compressed too much, the rockers will hit the valve cover and make noise. Use a little sealer on the half-moon shaped pieces (they're a common area for leaks). Don't overtighten when installing the valve cover.
