how much longer will the internet last?

The pace of technology is relentless..........how long before the Internet is made obsolete by something better,or will it cave in under the weight of viruses and / or advertising?

Well it will never die, only gt bigger, and transform into a more accesable medium.

That's interesting taranaki, hadn't thought about that. But I agree, you are onto something there. It could very well fold if some new medium emerges that will "trump" it, if it is able to surpass the internet in terms of accessibility and ease of use. I don't think that the internet will ever go away, but newer media will draw the attention of advertisers as well as users away from it.
I liken this to models of atomic structure. Every so often, a new atomic model emerges that puts the previous theory "into the dark ages." I agree that this could work in a similar fashion.

I agree, I think a new data transfer system will take over for the internet, but here's an interesting question. What will this medium be? Does it exest already? Is it the 802.11 type network?

Even if you change its structure it will still be the internet. Unless we revert to medieval ages the internet will never dissapear. Yes it will change and improve but it still be the internet.
And there is no 802.11 type of network. This protocol is set up for wireless lan transmisions wich woks the same way a normal LAN based on cat 5 cables but without wires.

... Just because it's called a network doesn't mean it has to be ethernet or token ring... There are tons of 802.11 networks out there. Any group of computers that can share data in any way is considered a network, if it were a group of computers that could communicate using simiphore then it would still be a network.

Obviously you still did not get my point. There in NO such thing as a 802.11 network. The 802.11 is a wireless transmision protocol not a type of network. A network can be based on 802.11 but not be it.
And my mention of a LAN was just an example show me where I said a LAN is the only type of network

Yes yes I see what you are saying just like TCP/IP and IPX are network protocols, but lets just say I want to play starcraft with my room mate, I don't say, "Hook up a lan game" 'cause he would ask "What kind, IPX, TCP/IP?" I say "Start an IPX game". A network using 802.11 would be an 802.11 network. A computer communication over an IPX protocal would be on an IPX network. Kinda like orders and philums all humans are mammals, but not all mammals are humans. 802.11 protocal networks are LAN, but not all LANs are 802.11. I was simply saing 802.11 to be specific as to what type of network, if I had used general terms then my post would have no meaning... I had to say what type of network it was.

there would have to be MAJOR work to have the internet be even based on 802.11 because wireless is very unsecure and alot of stuff on the net now has to do alot with passwords and credit card numbers so I doubt that will happen. I have heard rumors about the Gov. working on a new "Arpanet" for those who dont know Arpanet was created by the Gov. and later became the internet. but the new Arpanet has been rumored to have a 10/100 mbps transfer rate (i.e. home or corporate network) should be pretty cool, cant wait. if that does happen T1 will be considered crawling

My guess is, the internet will never die. As long as there is stuff available for download, research that can be done without going to a library, etc etc...then it will remain alive. There is so much stuff going on that relies on the internet that it would not make sense for it to cease.

That would be interesting, I remember doing some research on Arpanet back when it was running in its original form and it was so slow it could only support text based pages.
And your right, actually I doubt we will see an 802.11 based internet, being wireless it's always going to be a security nightmare :(

Katwoman is right......the internet will always be there. Nothing will make it obsolete......if something comes along that is better, it'll probably be based on or around the interent. The possiblity of some idiot making a virus or something to mess up the interent is more likely then it just going under. If it does......none of us will be around to see.
What JD@af made me think is that things get worse before they get better....by mentioning the dark ages......the world could go under then reevolve with a whole new system of technology. We are advacing into dangerous territories of technology. Who knows, the matrix could be real.
Most of that stuff in the last part was added to create more questions.

Ok what the heck are you guys smoking? A internet based on 802.11 that makes no sense. The internet is too diverse for that. All 802.11b can support is 11Mb/s and 802.11a 40Mb/s and ths is the max rate under the best conditions.
Also the range of 802.11 transmisions is very limited. And its aplications are good only for computers close together. If the entire internet would be based on it it would reqiure to fill the etire earth with transmiters every 100 m.
For wireless transmisions in large areas you use other systems beside 802.11. At work we have a microwave transmiter with a 7 miles range line of sight and its usind a completely different transmision standard. And threre are many more transmision standards aproved by the fcc. with way higher range and bandwith.
So 802.11 standard might be good for home aplications but no way as an internet backbone. A true backbone pipeline can suport anywere from 100MB/s to 1Gb/s and more.
So first do your homework and find out how networking works beyond you LAN parties and PC Magazine and then talk.

If the reference library has been superseded by the internet, surely it is just as plausible that a better delivery system could shrink the internet demand in much the same way?
there will surely come a time when the sum total of the world's information will be condensed into a palm - sized, voice activated, multilingual, multifunctional gizmo given away with every ten dollar gas purchase.........

I think that would be pretty damn cool. Youd be looking through the flyers, and see a coupon thats like "2$ off Know-it-all Organizer. Combined knowledge of the entire planet"

Only thing is, it would be kinda depressing if everyone knew everything. There isnt really any point in learning then.

Why must every one make things so cut and dry? Think outside the box! For the very reasons that were mentioned by jinushaun and Neutrino the entire internet couldn't be 802.11 however it would be a very good way to destribute it to the enduser.

Oh, and before you all jumped to conclusions as to what I was saying and lept forth to flame me for it, I said Is it the 802.11 type network? Unless my highschool english teacher lied to me, beleave that means an 802.11 like network... Meaning not the exact thing, but somthing like it.

I started contradicting you because the way you put it sounded like you wanted the internet to be based on 802.11 wich made no sense. And sorry to contradict you again but it would not be a good way to "distribute" to the end user. Maybe to be used by the end user but not to be used by an ISP to distribute. Although maybe I am too picky at your words and you meant something else.
And for the homework attack it was because it sounded like that is all you know. And this is just an observation but you might want to be more explicit in some of the posts so other people won't missunderstand you.
And me to I know what I am talking about because I am a student with my first major in Electronics and Information technology at a major university and have a job as a Sys Admin.

No worries bro, I'm not pissed :D Just a bit frustrated because usualy I have no problems saying what I mean, but sometimes no matter what I say people missunderstand me:mad:
Any how, what I was, and am now, trying to say is that a wireless network from local hubs to the end user will most likely be the next step in the internet. I only say 802.11 because (yes jinuseun) it was the first thing that popped into mind when I thought wireless communication. I'm sure by the time that the internet advances to that stage there will be a much better and more secure transfer protocal out there. But unless handhelds start getting more memory on them, would you really need a T1 to your palm:rolleyes: Wait, what am I saying, of course you do! I don't know why, but I'm sure there's a reason :D

What is funny is tha we kind of have something like this. I mean take my Ipaq for example ar any pocket pc with cf card adaptors. plug in a wireless modem or a 802.11b card (in my campus some buildings have coverage) or some other method and connect to the network. Well you'll get any info available on the internet wich is a lot.

Just wait untill there is wireless coverage in 99% of large cities, that will be crazy now that I think about it. It would add up to hundreds of thousands more people on the internet just walking around in their office building, or sitting in the park talking to their boss back at the office. I wonder when that time will come:rolleyes:

can't imagine they would ever lay cable down a 30 km backroad with 8 houses...............but then, they probably said that when telephones were first available.............
in real terms, the internet is still very new......compare a wind-up gramophone with a cd player, and it gives you some idea of how far we have to go.........
