Today I was driving down to Eastbourne in Wellington and was at Sorento Bay when some fool hurtles out in a Mazda Famillia Turbo and floors it and passes me and a Nissan Sentra in front on a blind corner. However he didn't see a Citroen ZX coming the other way and braked hard, overshot the coner, hit a large rock and flipped onto the rocky shore by Lowry bay The driver (A young male) was unharmed but his car was totalled.
What pisses me off was the Pt Howard fire-brigade wasted thier time retrieving his car off the rocks, they should have let it float away, me and the Sentra driver handed in our witness statements and the guy was arrested.
I can't believe fools like this are allowed on our roads- he took no notice of the fact that the area arounf the Eastern Bays of Wellington has claimed two lives in recent months- he could have killed me, the Sentra or the ZX driver or (not that it matters) himself and my 6O7 would have got it in the arse from the Nissan Mistral SUV behind me had he head on'd the ZX

Driver education in this country sucks!!!!!!
Fuck the LTSA!
and hp and car size limits for young drivers should be made law!

be carefull, you are starting to sound like an old man.......pretty soon you will be trading in the shopping cart for a Commodore(with a towball for the caravan)and wearing a hat while driving....
As a member of the senior crew,it is my responsibility to rant and rave about the poor standard of driving among youg people today, but I still recall with some considerable glee some of the stupid and suicidal stunts that I pulled when I was an acne-riddled bag of hormones with a brand new driver's licence.
Have to agree that it is far too easy for youth to get excessive horsepower, compulsory insurance would go a long way to correcting this problem. We need to stiffen up on the driving test pass rate too.....make it so that only the top 50% per month qualify, and you could lift the general standard immensely.

Now when i agree to this being a young driver anyway , but if i were a punk that just got license i would have started flaming you , you know how you feel when you get the license , like you're the best driver in the world , even if you haven't even driven your first thousand kilometers yet... So you know how it goes , you can't make young pepole drive calmly and always safely and obeying all the traffic signs...

No, but you can but them in small under powered cars to limit the damage they can do to others. Then the only way they can go fast is by learning how to drive.
My 1st cars a 998cc Datsun cherry. It was anything but fast, but once I learned about things like cornering lines, and drifting, and the effect of throttle changes and sudden braking, I got extremly good at eeking every last bit of traction out of its 155/70/13 tyres, and making every single one of its 63hp count.
I know if I had what I have now for a 1st car I would have either killed myself or someone else. But learning how to drive first, in a much slower car, along with some practicle driving lessons on a race track has given me the skills and level of awareness needed to handle a car that is quite capable of getting me arrested in only 3rd gear. (while the datsun valve bounced 4th long before I could even lose my license)

poeple whinge and bitch about the younger drivers but in my experience the OLD drivers can be just as bad.
I had the experience of an elderly lady pulling out blindly at an intersection, without looking, right in front of me, forcing me to slam on all anchors (it was a 100kph zone). I followed her until she pulled over and asked her why the fuck she did that. All I got was the "I've been driving for the past 60 years without an accident" and the "you young drivers are just too dangerous" responses.
OLD DRIVERS SUCK (and no Mr T you are not that old YET)

I'm with ya 100% on that one Moppie, I think I've learned quite a bit (Of the basics any way) from driving my little Ford Tempo around so I'd feel somewhat confident hopping into a faster car. But there are people like a friend of mine who never took the time to really learn how to drive and now has a WRX and recently spun it through a field :(

I agree Moppie- my first car was a gutless 1300cc Mazda 323 3dr which I learnt nothing from and then a Yugo 45 Handihatch which I learnt even less in, but then in my Renault 19 Monaco I learnt all the ropes with its sweet 1.6 l engine and FWD and was thus prepared for my Corolla FX-GT that came next.
Why do teens need a CRX or Supra?????
What is wrong with a Peugeot 1O6, Coroll a XL, Sentra S, Citroen AX, Suzuki Swift or Ford Escort?????
That is all they need, they are economical, reliable and safe cars and are great t learn to drive in, while Teens put money into wiser things

The only problem I have with this thread is the STEREOTYPES. I am a young, male driver on first year of license and can admit to you and others that I am not the greatest driver. Better than some (no names) but we're talking severe minority. I have done stupid things, but have learnt from them. For my first car, I'm getting a gutless 1600cc. I completely agree with this threads geenral concensus, but once again, you can't stereotype like that. I know many people in the same catagory as me who drive sensibly and safely within the speed limit. I have done around 3000ks and at least 500 hours of driving now and still feel inexperienced so I don't know how you expect to improve driver training?? (these figures were completed over 3 years). I am lucky to have my life and my license still intact, but am going to work with that now.

Let the government tell you how much horsepower a teens car can have and next they'll regulate horsepower on everyones car. Next thing you know they'll be telling my what color underwear i can wear on a particular day of the week. Sure young inexperienced drivers(me for one) can be dangerous and stupid, but more laws won't fix that. Us youngin's do stupid things all the time, it doesn't require a car. :)

3000k's in 500 hours =average speed of 6km/h...........either one of your figures is incorrect or you are pushing the car,not driving it.
The only way to get experience is to rack up the km's.3000kms is very little when you consider the enormous variations in driving conditions....day/night,fine/wet,town/country,motorway/backroad,sealed/unsealed.....
the other area of experience that new drivers lack is hazard avoidance.Until you have had a few heart-stopping moments caused by the inept behaviour of the driver in front, you tend to follow too close and assume too much.Emergency stop practice is fine, but when it comes to the real thing, you have very little chance unless you keep your options open by allowing the guy in front plenty of room.

I did the Ks when I was still learning. Don't know how many I have done since. The 500 is all up since I've had my license (estimate based on per week). ANd there was a big variation in the types of driving as well. Dirt, Night, Wet, Low Light, Country, Long Distance etc.

and now that I do 20x times the Ks in a year just for work what you have done in your life, and that 10x a year in my car I know just how ignorant I was, and have a pretty good idea what would have happened had I been let loose in a powerful car first off.
In the 8 years Iv been driving Iv probobly done over 250,000ks and I know im still not as good a driver as I could be, or as experianced as I could be.

The most hazardous kind of driver is the one who does not accept his own limitations.Usually these are the young guys with a shiny new licence who believe they can drive.Twenty years after passing my test,I know that I will never be the worlds greatest driver(which is one of the reasons that I don't sink all my spare cash into cars),but I can claim to have done enough k's in enough vehicles in enough different driving conditions to understand the limits of my skills. The car insurance industry is a very competitive market. If companies thought that young male drivers were a fair risk, they would lower their premiums to get the business. But they don't because statistically, young males are not as clever at driving as they like to think they are.

Dont forget that young FEMALE driviers accident stats are catching up to the males very quickly. Hopefully then the insurance companies will even out the freaking insurance rates.
I thing my truck classifies as a good learing -car. 93 Pathfinder, its anything BUT fast (i never bring it above 100k) And i have to be careful with the turns seeing as these damn suv's flip like nobody's business. So far ive put on about 50,000 km's on it and so i think im pretty mch secure with my skills. The only time i drive crazy is offraod with the 4wd engaged in 10 inch deep mud... hehe. Also a good think that helped me be not crazy on the raod is the ability to drive a bike on the roads. After I started driving a motorcycle, I quickly realized how stupid and blind people in thier cages can be, so i strive not to be another one of them. After getting sideswiped in my truck (thank god) im a very cauthois bike drivier. I would have either been missing a leg or be totally dead if that freaking ricer swiped me on my bike.

okay i'm a young driver, 17 and I agree with most of this anti-young driver thing. Yes we need more training. If any of you guys have done prodrive (a nz thing), you'd think it should be compulsary, as you get to take a corrolla out, and try and learn how to control it. (its also fun sliding in the mud).
But unless my friends are just really bad drivers, all young drivers suck.
I know one guy, who has been caught twice 50km/h over the limit (in 50 zones), he also frontended a brand new BMW on the motorway into another car.
Another one of my friends, crashed his car into a celica, and then later a pole. He then got a new car, and just lost his licence for 6months (50km/h over the limit)
Then yet another friend t-boned a mercedes somewhere!!!!!!!!
And finally this tuesday, another friend crashed!!!!.. He ROLLED his pajero on a straight piece of road, by handbraking it into the curb!!!
So I totally agree drivers should need more training!!!

This is exactly what I was talking about!!!!!!
Young drivers in cars that are to big and to powerful for them.
A new BMW, a fucken Pajero! a Celica! none of them are slow, and all do lots and lots of damage if you hit someone else.
None of these guys should have been driving them, and it shows the ignorance of the parents that they were allowed to. If they have that much money they should have got a 1300cc Nissan pulsar, or non-Turbo Starlet or something equaly small and underpowered but involving to drive.
Then when the wanted to go out and speed and drive like lunitics they would havet to work out how to drive the car to do it, and when they hit someone else the damage would be minimal.
I know I would rather be hit by a young ego maniac driving a starlet than a pajero!
Prodrive is very good! and yes it should be compulsory.
I was twice offered the opertunity to be one of the instructors, but each time I had other commitments on the weekends it was being run.

Prodrive is awesome, I never went myself but my Sister did and my Brother is going to this year, it should be compulsory, I have, however been to both Ford and Holden advanced courses and am a regular at the ones the dealership hold for Audi, Alfa, Subaru, VW and FIAT owners.
Also I think the Government shouls put a power limit of 70Kw and a strict-no turbo limit on young drivers under 21 that woul probably halve the road toll becaues the 15-21 y/o bracket has a high number of fatalities and a lot are due to speed and alchahol.

Hmm, I don't know if I agree with limiting cars for young drivers, because then they need to do it for elderly drivers, as their reactions are too slow for the cars. I rekon it puts too much power in the government. It should be things like turbos and such (the price of insurance already limits young drivers).
Things like compuslary 3rd party insurance should be needed. If a law was passed stopping young drivers insuring cars in their parents name, that would make more sense. Instead of using a loop-hole so they can drive a more dangerous car on the road. It also then puts more responsibility on the teenager, not on the parents. Responsibility then should equal maturity!!
Also instead of having this simple graduated licence over in New Zealand, make them take cars out onto a test track full of hazards. Then grade them on that aswell. It makes no difference if you can make a righthand corner at a controlled intersection, if you think you can drive 150 and still corner safely!!!
I think Germany has a system more like this, tho' i may be wrong.
oh and I am a teenager and agree with all this

Do you drve anything yet????? If not what do you plan on driving???(Trying to get a teenage perspective ;))

Yeah Jimmy I do drive.
I've got a 1990 Honda Civic Hatch (EX) model. I got it cause it was nz new and 54,000 on it!! :D and its not wound back.
I didn't care about the speed or anything. The cars good at getting around, and can still accerlate well (with up too two passengers).
You'll probably find that too many teenagers get their cars on what they think is coolest, thats why so many drive skylines and such.
But it is really amusing looking at some teenage drivers. I go too Rangitoto College (2600 students, biggest in the country :D ), buts its just funny to watch how some people drive, screeching out of carparks, sliding in the student carpark (gravel), whilst other cars are around (spraying gravel onto the other cars paint). I even see some students just park with the back of their car covering residents driveways!!! Its actually quite saddening.
But it shows one thing which teenager drivers (and all others can learn), is too show consideration!!!!!!!! Its not that hard to do!!, just drive to the approiate speed, don't be a wanker... etc
sorry for the ranting :(

dang man that's some crazy stuff that goes on down there i know that in my town of Randolph, Massachusetts..some teens can be crazy with cars...my friend Rizzi had a Ford Taurus SHO that he used 2 haul people in .. he'd go crazy with it doin over 90 mph while in a 35 mph zone... he totalled that thing a while back and now has 2 walk and get rides everywhere.....another one of my friends would take his parent's Lumina (i know sucky examples but hey i'm talkin bout the teens not the cars ;) ) he doesn't even have his permit yet and he was doin burnous with the thing all over the neighborhood and he drives it around his house by himself...crazy....my friend victor just got a brand new 2001 Mustang and i don't know what's gonna happen to that thing......me i have a choice 2 either drive mom's 1988 Nissan Sentra in my driveway (only 69hp) or my dad's 1996 Dodge Ram cargo van (got around 180 in it i think)...can't really be speed demons in those cars, and drivin with a a van is good because it teaches you manuverability and early braking and junk like that...i think that teens should get underpowered cars like what i get 2 drive as well.....hell then there wouldn't be any crazyness.....

Yes there would....the craziness wouldn't stop but the damage/hamr would be reduced. How I don't know because even 1300cc carby shitboxes can hit 80-120km/h which is enough to severely fuck over a lot of things...
