4.7 surgeing

have a 2001 4.7 Durango with a strange problem of engine surge at the top of hills while in cruise, or sometimes just driving down the road. It doesn't have to down shift out of overdrive to get this surge. as i'm going up the hill - with no down shift- as soon as the truck makes the crest of the hill the engine will jump 300-500 RPMs with no feeling of increase or decrease in speed - Its NOT down shifting when it does this. It will down shift when needed but it does this surging on all hills. I also have a 2001 Dakota with out this problem. I drive 30000 to 40000 miles a year and no matter what Chrysler says this isn't normal ANY IDEAS

My Durango does the same thing. I took it to AAMCO, they charged me $2000.00 to tell me that they could not find the problem. I took it to Dodge, they can not find the problem. Have you had any luck finding a fix?

I should of read the posts in this forum. I replaced the throttle position sensor and cleaned out the idle compensator. It seems that the problems have gone away, after dirving for 1 hour. I have my fingers crossed.

How much was the throttle positioning sensor ,where is the idle compensator and has anybody found a Chiltons manual or simular repair book for working on a 2001 dodge dakota or durango ?

My 2000 R/T was doing the same thing but I just changed the Throttle position sensor and that fixed it. Never looked at the idle compensator. My D idles fine, just the surging problem. I bought my TPS sensor thru NAPA auto parts for around $37-$40 bucks. A very fast do it yourself fix. You will need an allen wrench (forgot the size) to remove the 2 bolts holding the TPS sensor that is located on the drivers side of the Throttle body. Remove the 2 bolts, and the sensor slides out. Unplug the wiring harness to the old TPS and plug into new TPS, and then slide the TPS back into the throttle body and tighten down the 2 bolts.

Would highly recommend doing this when the engine is cool or warm but not hot.
