1989 turbo head gasket replacement.

Hi all, I purchased a 89 turbo from a good friend that was pampered and let sit. Only to blow the head gasket. There was no damage at all to the head, but while I have it off and im getting it redone to specs, the pistons are really carboned up. The very well known and reputable shop I brought the head for reconditioning, suggested pouring 1" of brake fluid on top of the pistons within the cylinder, let sit for three days then absorb/wipe away the carbon. He claims he has done this on many 7m turbo and non turbos with outstanding results. He sais that it will not only clean the piston/cylinder but remove any deposits that may be building up under or around the rings causing scrapage on the cylinder walls. Has anybody tried this before? If not, can someone recommend a differant procedure? Like I said, the cylinders apper to be in a+ condition with no scoring whatsoever.
This is the most important dilemna, WHICH HEAD GASKET DO I USE? I really dont want to do this again. I read somewhere maybey here to use a metal headgasket (HKS) and use a higher capacity radiator?
I want to do this right, so any input from anyone or everyones 2 cents would be gratefully appreciated!

There comes a time when all supra owners have to step up and rebuild their BHG engines. When it was my turn to do so I used an HKS Metal Headgasket accompanied by ARP Headstuds. Do not take the cheap route arround a rebuild only get the best. You'll be able to get more out of your engine this way without having to worry about breakage.
As far as types of HKS headgasklets it will depend on how much the machine shop shaves off your head. Ask the Machinists he will know best. and if you can afford the Stopper type gasket go for it. Down the road this gasket will support the highest amount of boost.

Thanks so much for your advise. I most certainly will use the brands you suggested. As far as there tendency to run hot, it that mostly under extensive prolonged boost? And are these gaskets built to withstand high temps?

hks steel head gasket all the way dont go the cheap having just rebuilt my 7MGTE from the groung with firged pistons new crank ETC....
a steel head gasket really is the way to go.
a word of advice if you have a CT26 stock turbo and stock motot only go to 8 pound your crank wont handle the boost until you work your motor

The stock M series crank will handle anything you can throw at it, ever notice how no one upgrades the crank besides the small touches like having it knife edged and balanced better.

in regards to 89 supra's comment... good working(little to no shaftplay) stock turbo CAN AND WILL handle 12 PSI all day every day...

the motor can also handle that much power....but it is recomended that the head gasket be replace with metal or stock

also rebuilt the motor for the power that youll be making... theres NO POINT of going forge pistons if you only plan to run 350hp...stock will handle fine without it...


and when you rebuilt make sure you do it the right way...

"do it once, do it right"
