I have a 91 CRX with 1.5 dual-port injected engine. While driving it normally it slowly lost power, even as i downshifted through the gears. It eventually stalled. Now it starts and runs rough for about 5 seconds and then it clangs a bit.But not very loud. It doesnt clang when cranking though. I shut it off immediately. It doesnt smoke either. Whats wrong? Jumped timing belt? Dropped valve? Broken rings?

First see if there is water in the oil or vise versa then check your dizzy cap, rotor button, ect. than Check your timing, do a compression test too just to make sure but if it's clanking and stuff, unless u overheated real bad a blown head gasket wouldn't cause it to clank but you could loose power. But it could be a number of things. Do you have any engine codes or anything. Just start at a good spot and start ruling things out till you find the problem

check for fuel pressure too

there is no oil in the water or vice verses. Have plenty of fuel pressure, it didnt get overheated, and compressions ok. what else?
also what would be a recommended swap that would be the easiest without putting the same size engine back in without alot of modifications? the info I got from the VIN # says it was manufactured by Honda Motor Co. Ltd. from the Suzuka,Japan plant.

Hey bro, do you mean a really loud clanking noise. If so I'm pretty sure its a connecting rod. Same thing happened to me the other day. I thought it was a rocker arm but took of the valve cover and nothing was loose or broken. You're gunna have to replace the engine or rebuild it.

It's not a real loud noise just enough to be noticable, and I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running.

did you check all parts of the distributor including the ignitor? I had an old distributor on my engine and all of a sudden it started stalling and wouldn't go about 4,000rpm and I had to keep gas on it, not to mention it knocked like a mother. Turned out the ignitor was bad (some how it had some kind of plant growing in it?! lol) loose cap I think. Anyway the engine wasn't getting enough spark because of the weak ignitor. causing all kinds of problems Good thing to check anyway.

P.S when I took it to the shop they said it was getting half the normal spark, and it was a wonder that the engine ran for 200 miles like that...

Could it be a transmisson problem? Does it do it in gear or in neutral?

If you really wanna find out if your motor is shot or repairable, take off your exh manifold, drop the oil pan, and grab the bottom of each connecting rod. try to wiggle them around real good. if theres ANY play in any of them, you spun a bearing. You'd either need to buy a new crank, new bearings and possibly a new rod. OR swap another engine in. The other thing you'll wanna check is your valve clearance. you may have too much which will cause a ticking noise from the top end of your engine. Go here (http://www.88-crx.com/repair/ServiceManual/CRX_Workshop_Manual.pdf/CRX_Workshop_Manual.pdf) and go down to engine and under that will be valve clearance check. good luck
