Getting new speakers.. suggestions?

Thinking of replacing the front speakers with a component system in my 95 EX coupe, since it has the factory tweeter locations already.

Mid-bass for the rear speakers? Was thinking it'd give a little more bass since I don't have any subs (and am not planning on any). But I know very little about speakers or stereos in general.

The speakers will be paired with a Pioneer DEH-7700MP headunit.

That's a good deck you have there. I actually like the 7600 better aesthetically, but the functions are all the same. The 3 pre-outs are nice, but they're only 2 volts. That's the only thing about that deck I don't dig, but that's easy to modify with line-drivers. Anyway, most people with that factory setup just throw some good 3-way 6.5"s in the doors and disconnect the factory tweeters and leave them there. If you're wanting to get components, that's where it gets tricky. Not all aftermarket tweeters will be able to replace the factory ones and mount in the same place, and look half-way decent. Most of them are designed to go into doors where there are no pre-existing tweeter provisions, which usually requires cutting a hole in the panel for flush mount applications, or just a few screws for surface mount applications which looks like ass. I'm not a big fan of Infinity speakers, especially the tweeters, but of all the speakers I've done in those cars, their tweeters are the easiest to get up in those factory tweeter locations. Honestly though, since it doesn't sound like you're really into great sound since you're not considering at least one sub, I would save yourself the effort and the money and just throw a 3-way in the door like I mentioned up top. You have to be careful which speakers you buy though because you have limited depth to work with. The best thing to do as far as picking out some speakers is just to go somewhere and listen to all they have. Remember, for the most part, what you pay for is what you get when it comes to the quality and design of the drivers as well as the materials used which equates to durability and longevity. But, the most important thing is which ones sound best to you. If you have questions about install, hit me up.

Well it's not that I'm not into good sound quality.. it's more of a money issue with the subs.

Also, I don't listen to a lot of rap or hip hop, so I don't really need a giant bassline. Which is why I was thinking some mid-bass speakers in the back deck would work nicely. But I'm not really sure exactly what the difference is between mid-bass and normal speakers.

Are you saying aftermarket tweeters don't work at all? What size are the stock tweeters? Could I get a 3-way speaker in the door and still leave the stock tweeters connected (or replace them with aftermarket).

I was looking at a pair of Pioneer TS-A1681R 3-way speakers.. would those fit in the stock location (without modification)? Cardomain says it's a direct fit but I don't know how much I trust that.

The deck is a pioneer DEH-P7700MP.. forgot the P before, don't know if that makes a difference. It's the newest model for the 7700 (my Alpine just got nabbed in a damn break-in).

You don't need subs to get great quality sound. Bass is just another aspect of music.

The only difference between midbass speakers and a normal coax is that midbass speakers don't have a tweeter like coaxial speakers do. The reason components come separated is so that you can use a crossover and cut off the frequency at different points for the tweeter and midbass separately. With a normal coax speaker you have both high and mid frequencies going through both the midrange woofer and the tweeter.

It's not so much that aftermarket tweeters don't work, it's that it's really hard to fit them into factory locations usually. that and usually the factory location is the worst spot for tweeters. Example: the factory tweeters in my car are mounted on the A pillar and use the front windshield to bouce the sound waves off of towards you. One of the best things to do with a component set is to get a pair of kick panels to place them in.

Generally all civics that I know of can fit 6.5" speakers up front in the doors, the only problem you might have is with depth, but I haven't come across a Pioneer speaker that won't fit in the doors.

But will midbass speakers give me MORE bass than say a 3-way speaker?

Right now I'm thinking.. leave the stock tweeters.. put the pioneer 3-ways in the front doors, and put midbass speakers in the rear deck.

if you have an amp powering them and frequency cut off at the right point with a decent speaker you should get some nice rich midbass.

My advice, since I do this for a living and all...and have been through thousands of these cases, is to put some good 3-way or 4-way (depending on how much highs you like) 6.5"s up front and some good 3-way 6x9s in the back. Put in plenty of dynamat and you'll get a pretty good midbass response out of the coaxials.

6 x 9s don't fit in the back, and I'm not gonna modify it so they do. Too much $$$ to do that.

And will stereo installation places put in dynamat if I ask? I'm not doing all of this myself, because as I've demonstrated I know little to nothing about it and want it done right.

how come people think you only need subs if you listen to rap. subs really make all types of music sound better from rap to classical. i can not understand why so many people think that.

Not many songs from other genres really have a low and drawn out bass line like rap music does. Also, different size subs sound better with different types of music. Lower, boomier bass is better produced with bigger subs and tighter bass notes that hit fast are better produced with smaller ones.

That's actually not true. I listen to every genre except rap and I couldn't live without subs. Even without turning the music up, it makes such a huge difference when you can't hear the lower part of the music. It's like having a rock band without a bass player...just stupid.

accutally i have a civic del sol same doors basicly but i bought a pair of 220w 6.5 speakers and the cone was to deep had to modify the baskets

yah, read my last sentence again. I said he might have a problem with depth.
