Cannot put car into gear when cold.

When it is cold outside, below 35 degrees, I can't put my 98 malibu into gear. I can't push the button in on the shifter, until the car has warmed up for 10-15 minutes. I live in MN so you can see how this would be a problem. I hope someone can help. Thanks.
