1997 1500 Check Engine light

Hey, all. The CE light on my '97 1500 5.9L came on last week and the code was for a #8 cylinder misfire. I changed the plugs and wires and air filter with a K&N filter. My question is should the CE light have gone off automatically or do I need to program it out? I don't mean to sound ignorant, but the light is still on and no other codes came up when the misfire was read. Any help would be appreciated.

You probably need to reset your pcm. To do so you have to disconnect your negative battery terminal and turn your key to start for about 20 seconds, let off, then reconnect your terminal. Code should be reset and light should go off. Hope this helps.

Turn the key like your starting your engine. All the way forward for 20 seconds. It's supposed to reset your pcm.

Hi, John M here. Someone told me that when you disconnect the battery, you lose all of the programming in the computer that runs the engine. Then, you have to drive the truck for 20-30 miles so that all of the sensors can feed their info to the computer to re-program itself. Is this true? Thanks in advance for any info. John M.

The PCM will gradually relearn as you drive anyway...that takes about 200 miles for a complete long-term learn.

Hey Did that work on the CE light, because I'm having the same reading and problem.

Will doing this cause anything else to become screwed up with my engine or truck? It's running great and I don't want to risk causing more problems. Will the truck "relearn" anything the wrong way during the 200 miles that it takes to reprogram the pcm?

If you're concerned about battery disconnect......CE will reset itself after a given # of engine starts (after problem is corrected). My truck thru some misfire codes and needed some tuneup attention. Mines a 2001, and local Stealership tech told me over phone CE would reset after 100 "good starts". It actually took about 30.

I did it over the weekend and I've drove more than 200 miles and I have no problems.
