what do I have to do to remove the factory radio to install an alternate one ?

buy a radio plate and wiring pigtail. it's the only way to do it right.

he is looking for instructions on removal not for what he needs to replace it. I did a quick search on the web and came up with this article from crutchfield. Take A look at it, I think it will hit key components but it does not go into detail so I am gonna search some more and try to find soemthing more detailed.

I just removed mine on my 1999 Ram. The plastic molding around the radio and guages is held in by clips and easily pulls off. Then, there are two bolts holding the radio in. Don't know if it's the same for 2001.

Yup, changed on my 01-removed original AM/FM cassette, and installed chrysler AM/FM cassette CD-sleek original appearance in an ST truck
