Hey I wanted to know if anyone could help me out? I got a 91 Caprice and the engine acts like it is getting too much gas. Kind of like too much fuel so it acts as if it is flooding. Any suggestions to what might be the problem??

Maybe we could help if you were a little more specific with the symptoms. Driveability issues? Idle? Part throttle, etc.

Well, when I start the car it starts up great but it then starts running like it is getting too much gas. I am not a great mechanic so I can't get too detailed about what is wrong. Also the tranny will not work in reverse. Drive works but reverse doesn't.
If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Does the engine light come on? If so, and even if not change the temperature sensor, not the one for the guage but for the computer. I have had 2 go bad, (open) then the computer thinks it's -150f . The car will start, but as soon as it starts to warm up, it will give the injectors too much fuel.

Thanks, I will try that because that is exactly what the car is doing. Start up is okay but after a minute or two the car seems like it wants to take off into space. Do you know anything about trannys? Cause my reverse has gone out and I wanted to know if I can get the tranny rebuilt or do I have to buy a new one?

I found out what the problem was with the fuel issue. Turns out it wasn't the fuel system at all, it was the cataylic converter. After cleaning the throttle body replacing all the throttle body gaskets and changing all the plugs, come to find out that the converter was stopped up. Now I got to get the tranny rebuilt and I should be able to get my baby on the road. Thanks for all your help

How does one tell if the cat is stuffed up? I have a 170,000 miles on my Caprice with original cat. Does it need to be replaced?

Cats by Federal Law are suppossed to last to at least 100k. I have some cars with almost 2 times that mileage and are fine. The only way they usually go bad is from driving the car with a too rich fuel mixture. Burns them out, actually have seen them glow in the dark. When the cats get clogged the car may run fine at idle, but has no power when driving, or climbing a hill. I would straightnen out any other problem the car may have first, before replacing cats. They are expensive, and in New York State you can't put a used one in a car. The junk yards are prohibited from selling them as are used air bags, which sucks!
As far as trannys go, if you intend to keep the car, get it rebuilt. I like going to the tranny shops that rebuild the Police tranny's. Have them put in the extra parts to make it heavy duty . Getting the old V-8 trans in junkyardds is getting real scarce, there havn't been any cars with the for over 10 years, which means you are going to get a high mileage unkown problem trans.
