Can anybody tell me how in the HELL does this happen? How does a battery go from 12V to 1V when they "claim" everything was turned off.

I don't know how it happens, but I can tell you it isn't unusual. I worked for a Lincoln dealership. If we had an LS in the showroom for any length of time, a couple of weeks, the battery would be dead. This is also true of the Thunderbird, which is basically the same car with different sheetmetal. I don't know if that was rectified in the newer models, I know they made some major changes in 2003, this problem may have gone a way. You might consider investing $20 in a trickel charger and just leave it on when your not going to be using the car for a while. Ford batteries are also suspect. We would loose about 10% of them over a winter, I guess it has something to do with them not getting fully charged, because they were always being moved 10 feet and shut off. When this happens Ford won't pay for a new battery, the dealer has to eat the cost of a new battery.

What are the details on the car and ANY aftermarket accessories?

I own a 2000 V-8 Ultimate. At the moment the only aftermarket items include upgraded brakes ad rotors, cold air intake, went down an inch with Eibach springs and that's about it for now. It's been in storage since June of last year. The battery was two days old when I delivered the car to the storage place. As far as accesories, I don't have any aftermarket ones that would drain the battery, all the electronics are stock.

My first idea was an aftermarket or improperly installed factory alarm/remote start which were notorious for draining batteries. Some trailer harnesses have caused problems, as well.
This will be difficult to impossible to track down.
Good luck.
