The March 2002 issue of Scale Auto had an article all about it... Too bad it's not the one they put online... :(

I'll see if I can dig it up for you when I get home... (unless someone else wants to beat me to it... ;))

Never saw that article, but the two ways i would suggest doing it are these...
If your very good with an airbrush u could do it freehand as some people do, but if like me your not then the best method would be to use frisket film. This is a low tack self adhesive clear film that usually comes in a roll, its used mainly by airbrush artists. U would simply need to cut out your design, stick to your model, then spray away!

Detail Master (http://www.detailmaster.com/p0000013.htm) has a couple of flame templates, outline them on tape or Bare Metal Foil
then stick them on and paint.:bandit:

jay@af, a scan would be much appreciated

i was thinking of doing the yellow first, masking off the yellow and then doing the black at the rear of the car
then doing the fade to white on the front freehand

otherwise i dont know how well yellow will cover black
