Monsoon sound system problem

Hi,

The "Monsoon" sound system in my 2000 Passat switches itself off and on randomly. Doesn't seem to be the usual loose wire scenario where the on/off is related to hitting bumps, etc. It also affects the tape (and presumably CD - haven't checked). I'm hoping someone else has experienced this and has suggestions for a source of the problem... It is reaaaallly fustraing and I was hoping for a starting point before I pulled the head unit out.

Also, I believe that I need a special tool to remove the head unit - anyone know where I can get this from?

It seems fairly common, but I haven't heard of a solution. The tool is available on ebay, do a search on "VW radio tool" or "BMW radio tool".
