Brake job?

Hi i am thinking of changing my brake pads myself. I have never done it before but I think I can handle it. I looked at chiltons but they don't give you much detail. I would appreciate any help you guys can give, tips, problem areas, good products, ect. Do I need any special tools for the job?

How do I check if my rotors need turning? and if they do can I just take them to a shop and have them do it?
