Catalytic Conveter Cover

Hi all:
My Catalytic converter cover rusted off and I wound up taking it off the other day. I guess it is a heat shield of sorts but rode 200 miles and it didn't seem any hotter than normal. The only thing I'm worried about is the proximity to the main coolant hose. I had a friend tell me it is not a problem and not worth getting it replaced. The bolts on the engine are so rusted I would probably have to have them retooled to attach another one. Any ideas? Should I have this done and one more doosy? Is this covered under the Powertrain warranty as it is an engine part? Can I bring it in and have it replaced? Thanks all. :smokin:

Well - it turns out that that cover is important because it is so close to the main coolant hose and the heat from the catalytic converter will nuke it. I got the cover and screws for $30 even from Bronx Hyundai. The parts guy there is a decent chap. There was no way WD-40 was getting those screws out of the manifold. My mechanic was able to get them out with an oxygen torch. He replaced the part. I had been told by 2 places not to even worry about it that they all fall off. Glad I took it to the AAA station. He charged me for an hours labor $68 which I am glad to pay. Hyundai may not have charged me more but frankly I don't trust the service techs at Hyundai. Have had bad experiences with more than one dealer (5 to be exact) and they ALWAYS rip you off even if they do a good job. So FWIW - if your catalytic converter cover comes off - the answer is REPLACE IT or you will wish you did one hot summer afternoon. Keep on trucking. Smoke em if ya gottem. :smokin:
