Clearcoat paint repair?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can provide some good advice on how to clean up several small areas on my 89 PA where the clearcoating is starting to flake and peel. The surface area is about the size of a couple of quarters, however the spots look like they have been gettin bigger the last few times I took my car to the wash. I know you can buy clearcoat spray in a can, so I'm wondering if anyone here had tried it out and how well it works for small repair jobs? If I buy some will I need to use some sort of high grit sandpaper to smooth out the spots where the c/c is flaking and then just spray it on there, or can I just spray it over the rough spots and let it dry? Or should I just re-coat the whole car? I want to keep the exterior of my car as clean as possible, but I don't want to pay $$$ for just a couple of spots of paint. Thanks for any info.

sorry to say, but you can forget that idea, once your clearcoat is peeling off, you are looking at a "bigger" job than just buying a can and spray over it. For once I assume your car has a metallic base and the clearcoat over it. Once you start sanding into the metallic base your paint at this spot is ruined.Especially as you want to use high grit sandpaper. The problem with peeling clearcoat is that you now have a low spot of metallic base and a remaining high spot of clearcoat, not good to even out. You might be able to have one of these paint doctors have it touched up for small money, but you might as well have a pro paint that entire panel.
