check your ignition system.. (ignition misfire causes high HC gas)

my accord did the same thing, it passed everything but HC idle. Your car is not burning enough fuel at idle. I replaced my air filter, plugs, cap, rotor and added RXP to my fuel. Drove it to work (50 miles) and it passed with eaze. The numbers were half.

You can, but it won't affect whether you pass or not seeing as the only reason you failed was your idle.

I agree, a tune up should solve your problems

Yup, like they said, HC's are unburnt fuel. either your not getting proper spark or your running rich.

well i put premium in the tank yesterday and this car hasnt been driven / taken car of in like 2 years i put new plugs CAI changed oil and oil filter and put in some fuel injection cleaner....how long u think i should drive it for to get the premium and injection cleaner circulated? What else would u do to make it pass?

id do the full tank just to be sure. did u change the plug wires? what about cap and rotor? those should be changed too.

Go for a long high speed run (about 10 mins) then have the guy do the smog check while the engine is EXTREMELY hot. I failed my first smog check and doing that made me pass the second time. Since I knew the smog check guy he told me to park and rev the engine between 3-4000 rpm for about 5 minutes. That heats up everything and makes emissions a little cleaner. He said it's illegal for him to let me do that, and if a state inspector caught me doing that they wouldn't let me test...but it worked!

haha..I was just thinking the same thing. So glad we don't have that emmissions crap in MT..then again we are some odd couple thousand feet above sea level I think..that sucks =(

Someone once told me NOT to run premium fuel when doing emission tests. He never gave me the scientific explanation for why, but I do know that running higher octane in your HF is not helping.
Octane ratings determine how much you can compress the fuel mixture before it combusts on its own. Higher performance engines need it since they run higher compression ratios.

High octane gas also burns slower, so right now your car is polluting more. Just run the high octane stuff through and gas up with regular. Complete the tune-up and you'll be as ready as possible for your emission test. GL
