97 Steering Problems

I have a 97 ext. cab w/ a 4.3L., My steering seems really easy, and going around corners it seems to hit a spot where it becomes even easier, like the steering wheel kicks out and their isn't any resistance. No noise or loose parts from what i see, would a sensor cause this problem.

Mine has same prob. I am told it's the EVO sensor.
About a $50 part that many have said is easy to
replace but I'll take mine to dealer. I was looking
under there and there's alot of airbag wiring that
I dont want to get near.

Yeh my truck has the exact same promblem, but it hasnt really bothered my much at all and im used to it now. But i was also told that it can go bad to a point where it could easily cause an accident.

My '97 K1500 has the exact same problem. Just bought it, and I noticed the problem while test driving it. If it's a $50 + labor fix, I think it'll be worth it. If either of you get it done before me, update the thread and let me know if it works. I'll do the same.

well, I replaced the sensor ($75.00), and everything is back to normal.

Wow...I have the Exact Same problem...will get on getting the sensor!
I just figured it wasn't any thing too big. but i can see where it could cause a wreck!

cackster, did replacing the EVO sensor fix your problem?

I just changed my EVO sensor today. It took less than an hour, with most of the time spent on removing the foam rubber cover from the wiring connection.
I did make note of the position of the sensor in relation to the steering shaft before removing the original part. Also, the air bag wiring is in that general area, but it would take more abuse than just unplugging the steering sensor to cause a problem.
My local GM parts dealer wanted $87 for the new part. The next closest dealer wants $67. I got mine online from http://gmpartsdirect.com/ , part# 26064468. Total cost was about $50 after S&H.
I've had my '98 Z71 for about a month now. I got it down in Fort Worth and it was clean as a whistle. I'm hoping the original owner ran across all the common problems & had them resolved during the 100,000 he drove it. I found this forum by accident and have already learned more about my new truck than I could have imagined!
